COLEMAN, MARY nee PHIPPS

 

Mary Phipps was born in Blackfriars, London about 1840, and came to New Zealand as a young baby with her parents James and Mary Phipps nee Hickman settling at Nelson.

 

At the age of 16, she married William Coleman at Waimea, Nelson and the couple began farming, then later went gold digging before buying a schooner The Surprise and trading in the Marlborough Sounds.After farming again in the Rangitikei, they eventually came to Taranaki settling at Dalziel Road, Te Roti in 1888.Here, with their large family of 16 children, they took up farming and saw milling.

 

William and Mary celebrated their golden wedding in 1905, and Mary died on the 18 October 1909 and is buried at the Eltham cemetery.
