DAHL, ELIZABETH DAGMAR nee CLAUSEN

Elizabeth Dagmar Clausen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1885, the daughter of Christian and Marie Clausen nee Weber. In 1908, she married there coming to New Zealand with her husband Carl Peter Johannes Dahl and a daughter in 1920.They landed in Auckland, and then came to Hawera where they remained.

Elizabeth was a foundation member of Kiwi Rebekah Lodge IOOF, and during the period of her membership passed through all the chairs of office to qualify as Noble Grand, a position she held twice. She was prominent in all lodge social activities and for 10 years assumed practically sole responsibility for the annual Christmas tree, very dear to her own heart with memories of the traditional significance of the tree in her native land.

She "adopted" many children for that occasion and for this and other acts of kindness at birthdays and in times of sickness was well remembered by scores of young folk.

Elizabeth was a skilled needlewoman, a member of both the Turitown (Hawera) and Ramanui Women's Institutes and a one time member of the Park Croquet Club.

At her funeral, members of the Kiwi Rebekah Lodge, in full regalia joined the cortege at the Hawera cemetery gates and for the first time in Hawera the women's lodge burial service was read by Past Chaplain Sister Kathleen Burney.Elizabeth's own lodge regalia and jewel lay on the casket.

Elizabeth Dagmar Dahl died on the 29 September 1943 at Hawera at the age of 58 years, and is buried at the Hawera cemetery.
