HOLFORD, ALICE HANNAH
Alice Holford began her nursing training in 1879, and was the fourth nurse to be trained in a hospital in New Zealand, and the first to apply for registration.� She spent some months of her training at the Hawera hospital, which at that time, was a branch of the one at New Plymouth.
In 1902, after saving �200, to pay the fees, she went to Australia to take a mid-wifery course, as there was none available in New Zealand then.
During the next few years, she worked in private practice in New Plymouth for Dr George Home and later for Doctors Walker and Leatham. In 1905, she was made the first matron of the nurses' training school in Dunedin. She remained in that position until her retirement in 1927.
Alice Hannah Holford died on the 22 December 1966 at New Plymouth aged 99 years.
