SOLDIER SETTLEMENTS
MANGATEPARU, MORRINSVILLE, WAIKATO
To give returning soldiers a new start after the First World War the New Zealand Government made purchases of land under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act 1916.
These blocks were subdivided into sections and the offered to returned soldiers
The following were the soldiers and the farms that they won by ballot. Some soldiers did not stay long and the farms were offered to other returned soldiers hence more than one name for a farm number.
In November 2014 I received the following email - I found you most informative website 'Sooty's Home Page' through searching on-line for information regarding my grandfather Frederick Charles Horatio Cowan. Fred was a returned WW1 serviceman, arriving back in Auckland in early 1917. In November 1917 Fred was granted 130 acres in an allotment of 'unimproved land' in the Waitoa Survey District in the soldier settlement of Mangateparu - this shows at the top Section '10' and 'FCH Cowan', the neighbour being 'RH Farland'. I note your list of soldier settlers does not include either FCH Cowan, RH Farland or DH Parke, but as the settlement map is dated 1919, it is possible that these three soldier settlers shown at Sections 8, 9 and 10 pre-dated those shown in your list. It also begs the question "where were Sections 1-7 of the first soldier settler land grants?" Maungakahiku Road' is the road upon which Fred's property lay. I can find no reference to this road today, and assume that this is now the present 'Herbert Road'. Grandfather Fred farmed this land until 1929, when he leased the property out and moved to Whangarei. My father and two uncles were born while at this property, all attending the Mangateparu School where Fred sat on the school committee. R J (Lou) Cowan - Palmerston, NT, Australia.
