SOLDIER SETTLEMENTS
OMANA, ARDKEEN, OHUKA, WAIAU, MANGAHOPAI, TARAMARAMA, MOEANGIANGI - WAIROA DISTRICT, HAWKES BAY
To give returning soldiers a new start after the First World War the New Zealand Government made purchases of land under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act 1916.

A ballot for Omana, Ardkeen and Ohuka soldiers settlements took place this morning in Everybody's Theatre. There was a large attendance of soldiers present to witness the ballot, the marbles being drawn by Mr Marsh, Crown Lands Commissioner. Messrs Farquhar and McRae acted as scrutineers on behalf of the soldiers.

Mr W H Nicoll [sic], of the Ashburton branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., has been successful in his application for a 600 acre block in the Ardkeen soldier settlement, Wairoa, Hawke's Bay. This section was first drawn by Mr C. W. McKeegan, of Christchurch, who was successful at the Waitohi Peaks ballot.

LAND FOR SOLDIERS. In connection with the recent ballot of the sections in the Ardkeen, Omana and Ohuka settlements, the appended list of men drew second marble and have the opportunity to take over the property if the person who was successful withdraws (those whose district is not mentioned are outside men, while a number of those appearing below secured a section in an ultimate ballot).
