World War One Recruiting & Conscription in New Zealand
Following is a copy of a World War One form indicating that Army files included some held for over-age (or unfit?) men, who in 1918 were asked if they were prepared to join the Samoan Garrison and so free up men for the Fronts. These servicemen in Samoa or in Training Camps or Army HQ in New Zealand would not appear in the NZEF Rolls, but their Army file would be held in Archives Wellington and listed in Archway.
"Dear Sir,
- As you are doubtless aware, one of the duties placed on New
Zealand in this great war is to guard and hold Samoa, which our gallant
New Zealand troops captured in 1914.
On the other hand, every physically fit recruit is required on the Western
Front or in the Near East, and this precludes us from utilising such men in
purely garrison duty in Samoa.
Your file discloses the fact that, with the exception of your age, you are
otherwise apparently physically fit for military service abroad, and I make
this appeal to you to volunteer your services for duty in Samoa.
I am sure you would have proceeded on active service had the military
medical authorities been able to accept you, and it has been decided to give
you this opportunity of serving the Empire in her hour of need.
If you can see your way clear to place your services at our disposal for
Samoan garrison duty, I shall be glad to hear from you accordingly and will
make arrangements for your medical examination.
I enclose a form of application, which I shall be pleased to have completed
and returned to me.
Yours faithfully,
D. C. W. Cossgrove, Captain, Director of Recruiting."
