NEW ZEALAND AND WORLD WAR ONE
SOLDIER SETTLEMENTS

From Bradbury's Illustrated Series - Bay of Plenty and Rotorua - 1928

SOLDIER SETTLEMENTS - It is generally conceded that the government has endeavoured to carry out its duty in the way of providing for those returned soldiers who desired to follow agricultural pursuits. There is an air of freedom about a country life that appeals more or less to the average civilian but to the returned soldier the appeal is much more powerful. The conditions of life in the most farming districts are very much better than in former years. Telephones and wireless sets are now in general use, the roads have been much improved and transit facilities are consequently better.

Up to March 31st, 1927 a total of 22,585 returned soldiers had been repatriated by the Lands Department, the advances totalling 22,627,864, less repayments of 5,764,770.
