WALKER, AMY nee MADDOCK

 

Amy Maddock was born in Kapuni on the 23 September 1900, the eldest of four children of William Henry and Louisa Elizabeth nee Symmans.Following the death of her mother, she moved to Otakeho when she was 13.At the age of 14, Amy began work at the Kaupokonui Dairy Co's general store where she later became postmistress and cashier.

 

She left Kaupokonui in the early 1930s to work for the Hawera Gas Company and within a short time was appointed secretary.Amy was a devoted worker for the St John Ambulance Association and obtained certificates in medical hygiene, home nursing, first aid and hospital voluntary aid.

 

After her marriage in 1951 to Malcolm Fraser Walker (known as Mac), the couple managed the Kaupokonui store in partnership with Brian Scanell.

 

Later they moved to Manaia where they purchased a small farmlet and began producing onions and tomatoes.When Malcolm died in 1963, the property was sold and Amy moved to Hawera.She continued her voluntary activities and gave up helping with meals on wheels only when failing eyesight began to restrict her activities.

 

Amy Walker died on the 1 July 1984 at Hawera aged 83 years, and is buried at the Manaia cemetery.
