WALLS, JEAN CLAUDE nee McLEAN

 

Jean McLean was born on the 27 November 1907 at Hawera, the daughter of James and Edith Jane McLean nee Somervell. In 1945 she married Clarence Herbert Walls in Hawera.

 

Jean was a prominent member of the Hawera Ladies Golf Club since the early 1930's and had been a committee member for many years.She was club president for three years, and was made a life member shortly before her death.She was also a keen bridge player with the Hawera Bridge Club where she was a committee member.She was also a member of the Hawera Women�s Club.

 

Jean ran Somerset House, a private boarding house in Union Street, for nearly 30 years until it closed down in the early 1970s.She took over the running of the house upon the death of her mother in 1947.Jean was a very hard worked and spent many hours at the coal range preparing meals for her permanent and casual boarders.Being so close to the railway station, Somerset House was a popular accommodation house.

 

Jean Walls died on the 3 December 1976 aged 69 years and is buried at the Hawera cemetery.
