Brock, Richmond, VA : V A Historical Society, 1886, page 97, we find the birt h of B enjamin Goss, Sr. recorded: "The 2d 8ber, 1742, wa s born Bi njamen Joss, son of Jamse Joss and of Mariane, hi s wife." ( Note: Benjamin Goss was born in 1742 not 1743 a s many genea logists report. His birth was taken from the r ecord book i n King William Parish, Manakin-Town, Goochlan d Co., VA. Th e record book was written in French and trans lated into Eng lish. Misspellings/mistranslations occurred . Joss should b e Goss.) In Henry William Clark's book, Genealogies of the Davis a n d Goss Families in Two Parts, we find this entry: John Pr es ton Goss, Sr. (1847-?), of Richmond, VA and who made th e ge nealogy of the Goss family a study for many years said : " I heard my father, John W. Goss, grandson of Benjamin , Sr. , say that Benjamin was a son by the second marriag e of hi s father, and that he, Benjamin, had two half-broth ers olde r than himself that went to North Carolina.....I w ill menti on that my father said his great grandfather, th e father o f Benjamin, Sr., died in England, having gone th ere to atte nd to some business, sickened and died there. In 1761, when he was 20 years old, he enlisted, from Bucki n gham Co., Virginia, in Major Andrew Lewis' Company and se rv ed four months in the French and Indian War in Colonel W ill iam Byrd's Regiment, 2d Virginia.
