Mr & Mrs Garland Soper came to Caterham 1863. As congregationalists, they found no nonconformist family near [& no church for 7m, except a small building, in the old village. So Mr Soper, a lay preacher, started preaching Sunday evenings, renting a carpenter's shop Oct 1863-Mar 1864 when family circumstances removed Soper from Caterham. George Davis, father of Mrs Soper built a small chapel for 200 in Waller Rd, opened Nov 1865 & gifted it to his son-in-law. Mr Soper, then residing at Wanstead, returned & took charge of the pulpit assisted by Dr Hoby. He put the church in trust when Rev French was elected minister Feb 1868. A new plot bought June 1874, for a �6000 church. W G Soper laid foundation stones. It opened Apr 1875. Mrs Soper presented a �250 organ; Edited from Congregationalism in Surrey
