He was stopped by 2 men with faces blacked, demanding money. Soper, a stout, powerfull man floored a ruffian with the butt of his whip & disabled him. The other tripped Soper up & after severe kicking & falls on the hard turnpike, Soper had the good fortune of breaking the ruffian's thigh. The robbers taken to Marlborough where they were identified as Soper's near neighbours. William Chaily & George Calden, 2 notorious characters.
