Sqr claimed 11 Me110s destroyed nr Mezieres; FO Brown, 2, Kilmartin, 2 & Richey 2, Sgt Soper 3 & F/L Walker 2, 1 pilot downed (though Luftwaffe recorded loosing only 2). Take-off 18:27 6 Dec 1944 & shot down. Ware said... It was a terrible night, cloudy & very bad weather, but weather was good above clouds. We carryed out high level Bomber Support patrol in Koblenz area. returning, I got hit by heavy flak at 15,000ft & was going down. Then I became victim of a night fighter. Violent evasive action led to further height loss, drop tanks jettisoned & I struggled to maintain flying speed long enough to reach the Allied front. I'd lost all power & lost height. I told my navigator to get out. I landed in a frozen field, in Belgium, nr Liege breaking my ankle. US troops found him in the morning.
