- Soper's pilot Lloyd Allan Trigg, RNZAF Sqdn 200/D awarded a VC for conspicuous bravery. After 8 hours on patrol in their B-24 Liberator, a surfaced U-boat was sighted, Trigg immediatly attacked & was hit by the submarine's anti-aircraft guns & caught fire, but the attack continued, dropping depth charges from 50ft on the U-boat, which sank after 20 minutes. The Liberator dived into the sea, killing the crew of 8. Some U-boat crew were resued in a dinghy that broke loose from the Liberator ; Times article 3 Nov 1943;
- The U-boat U-468 was sunk, less than a year from launch, on her 3rd patrol, off Bathurst between Cape Verde Islands & Africa, 44 dead. Her Commander & 5 or 6 crew survived & were picked up by a RN corvette: from uboat.net
- T J Soper a gunner in crew of 8 on a B-24 Liberator, heavy bomber of 200 Sdr, based in Bathurst, Gambia (now Banjuil). It attacked a surfaced U-boat 11 Aug 1943; 240m SW Dakar; 12.20N, 20.07W google map. The submarine's 20mm cannon shells hit the Liberator at 2,000mtrs but the pilot continued the attack, dropping depth charges at 15m. The plane's crew killed when it crashed & exploded near the submarine. 20 of the U-boat's crew of 39 [other articles say 51?] escaped it's sinking, but sharks & drowning meant just the capt & 6 others were rescued the next day, after a dingy was miraculously found in the plane's debris. The pilot got the only VC given solely from bravery testimony by the enemy. B-24's lighter construction & fuselage fuel tanks made it vunerable to shells & its high wing could cause fuselage break-up if ditched. Partly from google books

- Perhaps this account of a Soper who died of dysentry in the trenches was Morley? [Perhaps it's possible that burial at sea avoided contageon?]
- A 'chum' Howard Leopold Morry of the Royal Newfoundland Reg, was with a Soper when he died & wrote in his memoir; "One night we were sent out digging a trench and Soper was detailed to go with us. He was awful bad with dysentery and I saw how weak he was. When we got out there the Sergeant made a comfortable place for him to lie down, while we were digging. When we were coming in Ted Winter and I went to get him. We shook him thought he was asleep but he was dead. We brought him in. At first we thought he had been shot by a sniper, but no, he just pegged out, poor fellow"........ "More than half down with dysentery and fever, beside the other casualties. No relief, no reinforcements coming, no matter how sick you were. Medicine and duty was all we got."
