: Battle of Jutland, off Denmark, 1916, the largest naval battle of all time : HMS Defence was the 1st Cruiser Squadron's flagship. Built 1907, these armored cruisers had been made obsolete by modern Dreadnoughts. The squadron came into range of German capital ships when passing between British & German fleets to attacked a disabled German cruiser. It's cordite magazine exploded. All 893 crew died. A 2nd Soper died later that day when all hands lost on HMS Black Prince, a sister ship in the squadron

A fellow soldier described the conditions Sep 1916 thus: 'In the blazing heat of the tropical sun we started, each man leading two horses, besides 2 haversack, bandolier with 90 rounds of ball ammunition, water bottle, rifle & bayonet. On & on we trekked, men falling out by the way with heatstroke, many stark mad & men told off to hold the poor devils down. Reaching camp we were glad to get into tents & lie down & drink lots of iced water. Many others went sick the next few days, some of them dying.' : At Gallipoli, the 3rd attack on Krithia, 4 Jun 1915. Trench warfare created 15,500 casualties on both sides and was as unsucessful as the previous two. Most gains were lost in the Turkish counter attack on the 6th, (William died 4th [or 4th]). Presumably he was in the RN infantry division involved in the attack (formed when navy enlisted were more than could serve on ships) : Helles War Memorial : a W G Soper (but possibly the W Soper of the London Reg) on Christ Church's Memorial, St Albans Rd, Barnet, London
