Mr Souper in The Daily Southern Cross. 30 Aug 1876
On 24 Nov 1874, you kindly afforded space in your columns for my letter drawing attention to a Mr Souper. This name of Souper has since become more familiarised with the public by my advertisements. I now wish to inform your readers who have expressed surprise at my not giving the intelligence, that I would have done so at the time of the trial & I then remembered a long forgotten circumstance, which, was only brought to my memory through observing in a portion in a country newspaper giving an account of the "159th day" of the Tichborne trial, the name of Trcdijell. After taxing my memory & comparing dates and facts in connection with Souper, I was thoroughly impressed & wrote at once to persons in Lanneeston, Tasmania. On 28 Nov 1874, I wrote to the Colonial Secretary of Tasmania & received a reply 31 Dec. On 15 Jan 1875, I wrote a long letter registered to the Lord Chief Justice of England. I having waited a considerable time without an acknowledgment, I, on [? date] sent a copy, registered with additional matters, to the editor of the Times. No unanswered copies of these, dated Dec 19??, have since been for w.nded liv liiH
Excellency the Governor to the Hon Secretary for Foreign Affairs, & hitherto unacknowledged. Souper returned to England from Tasmania in 1864, and it was in the following year (1865) that Lady Tichborne instituted inquiries for her son. Now, what does this mean? A very deuplyid.iiiiH'd scheme, to the present unfathomed. Who is 'Mr Souper' If he was the Mr 'IVhhouio who left Rio de Janeiro 20 April 18-4. I ask what has become of the 'Helta' and her crew?— l am, sir, yours, ext, J. 1). D.
