The march was organised to bring to attention the special culture of Cornwall. The fact that
in 1549 it was not understood by the authorities that the Cornish of the time only
understood their own language and Latin, and that the new prayer book was completely
foreign to them. Even to this day unlike Wales and Scotland funds are not made available
for the teaching of Cornish or Cornwall's history. Europe has acknowledged our different
identity without this they would not of considered Cornwall for Objective One Funding.
However the Whitehall government will not even consider us under the Framework
Convention for National Minorities.
They insist on including Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly in a South West Region (covering
an area including Gloucestershire and Wiltshire) which proved disastrous within the
European Elections, Cornwall lost the only person to understand and speak for its affairs in
Europe.
They are trying to control Objective One funding through a South West Development
Agency. We need to ensure that this money is used for giving Cornwall its own economy,
all to often when help has been available up country business has made use of the grants,
only to leave Cornwall when the financial assistance ceased. Not solving the employment
situation in fact making it worse.
Police, Ambulance Services, and Magistrates Courts, have come under the combined
control of Devon and Cornwall, and the Fire Service may follow shortly. This way
Cornwall looses control of its services, and we say it is a danger to the public as the
centralised control rooms are not aquatinted with Cornish place names, also unlike the up
country English Counties we are only adjacent at the Tamar with Devon surrounded on the
other three sides by sea. We cannot call on any other authority in a crisis.
Cornwall is looking for its own University. A economy to enable the young trained at the
university to remain in Cornwall (assisted by objective one). With the Isles of Scilly its
Culture and heritage recognised. to this aim :-
