In the year of our Lord 1816, the McLeaird and Rushing families were joined, in the marriage of William McLeaird and Elvey Rushing. Family histories have recorded much about William, but Elvey Rushing remains the elusive ancestor. Nothing is known about her parents so far.
William McLeaird, of Scotch descent, was born in Anson County, North Carolina.He served as a soldier in the War of 1812. He also served in the militia of his State.
William's surname McLeaird has an interesting history. Some folks claim the name McLeaird came from McLeod.
Copies of William's War of 1812 records show his surname recorded as McLeaird, McCleard, and McLaird. He wrote to the Pension Commissioners in 1872 stating:
"I am not distinct in my recollection how my name was spelled in the Army Roll or in my discharge, but the following is the correct spelling of my name--William McLeaird."
Over the years, Wlliam's descendants have spelled their surname in various ways: McLeaird, McLaird, McLeard, Leaird, Laird, Lard, and Leard. Therefore you will find in this family genealogy these varieties, even among individual families!
Starting out in Anson County, North Carolina, William and his wife Elvey eventually settled in the Reed Creek Community (Hart County Georgia) near the Tugalo River.
By trade William was a hatter. They were blessed with nine sons and three daughters.
William and Elvey rest in the Old Canon Baptist Church Cemetery. There is a large granite monument placed between the original gravestones of William and Elvey. On this monument is engraved:
"True to their convictions as the polar star, they stood for the right. Feerless of criticism, braver souls never faced a cannon. Honor to their ahes, blessed peace to their immortal souls."

Second Generation James W. Leard united the O'Barr family line with his marriage to Mary O'Barr of Reed Creek, Hart County, Georgia. James owned a grist mill, cotton gin, thresher, and other machinery. He was engaged in farming. He was also a large land owner and a hat maker.

By 1855 Jesse and his family had moved to Tennessee and by 1857 they were living in Clark County, Arkansas. They lived in the Clear Springs area on Terrenoire Creek.

Caswell enlisted with the 9th Battalion Georgia Volunteers, Company A, on 4 March 1862. His brother David also enlisted with this unit at the same time.
He is believed to have died of small pox at Ft Delaware where he was a POW. The prisoners who died at Ft Delaware were buried in a mass grave now designated as Finns Point National Cemetery. There is a monument erected to the some 2,436 Confederate prisoners buried there. His name is listed on a bronze plate as Caswell Lard.
Caswell married �Leona Ann STIEFEL� on 28 Mar 1858 in Hart County, Georgia. Leona was born on 7 Apr 1833, died on 14 Nov 1904, at age 71, and was buried in Crossroads Baptist Cemetery, Hart Georgia. Other names for Leona were Delona, and Lony STEIFFLE.

William J. Leard served the Confederate States of America as a private with Company K, 26th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry. He enlisted 10 May 1862. He was wounded in the leg on at Gettysburg 1863 and captured. He was hospitalized at Gettsyburg and later in September 1863 was exchanged for another prisoner. He was back on Confederate duty in November 1864, but was captured again at Petersberg, Virginia, and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 24 June 1865 and released.
After the war William returned home to Anson County, North Carolina, and served on the Board of County Commissioners and was chairman 1868-1869.
When his wife Angeline died in 1886 he married two more times before his death at age 69.

William Jonathan Leard, known as John, was a farmer by profession, but a mechanic and tinkerer at heart!
About 1907 he was living in Hartwell, Georgia, and in those horse and buggy days he decided to build an automobile. According to his daughter Prudie he ordered the auto's engine but built the rest of the car himself. Prudie's older sister Dessie said she learned to drive in that car.
The car actually ran quite well and John Leard used to drive it all over the Hartwell, Fair Play, and Westminster areas. The only problem about it was that it scared every horse and mule in the territory--- testified the daughters.
In the June 17th, 1946 issue of LIFE magazine there appeared a photo of John Leard's car. This issue celebrated the 50th anniversary of the motorcar.
