General Notes: In the 1840's, it is said, that Sarah Dickinson rode horseback from Hancock County, Georgia to Coweta County, Georgia, with one orphan grandson, Robert P. Burch, in front of her on the horse, and another, Jimmey E. Jones, behind her to the home of John Simms, her son, who was among the first settlers of Coweta County. Sarah came to Coweta County after the county was formed. At the same time her sons, John and Brittian, and several of her sons-in-laws with their families, founding an extensive family relationship which is still of interest to many citizens of the county and her descendants are so numerous that they were able to honor her by bestowing her name of the SARAH DICKINSON Chapter, D.A.R. by Martha Reid Robinson. General Notes: Virginia Simms was known professionally as Ginny Simms. She sang with the Kay Kyser orchestra in the 1930's and early 1940's and then tried an actin career, which started with a bang. She even had top billing over Lucille Ball, but fizzled after a few years.

Her first husband was Hyatt Von Dehn. He was starting a hotel chain and needed a name. Ginny suggested Hyatt and the rest is history.

Her second husband was Bob Calhoun.

Her third husband was Don Eastvold.

Before she was born her father prayed that she would inherit his musical talent, and his prayer was answered. While Virginia was in the fourth grade, she and two friends began singing for many of the clubs.

The Lions Club took the trio to a meeting in Modesto, California where a man from Hollywood hired the trio to go on the air on DNX. Virginia was only 14 years old where her mother went with the trio to Hollywood to appear on KNX.

Virginia was hired out of the trio to sing with a band that went broke in Chicago. There she was hired by Kay Kyser, who called her "Ginny" and remained with her for years.

In 1941, after she left Kyser, Ginny had a show of her own....the "Teenage Show". Later she sang with the Phillip Morris Show; The Borden Milk Show; and the Coca Cola Show. She retired after her marriage to Don Eastvold and was living in Honolulu when her father died there in 1978.

Ginny Simms, a former big band singer who earned her fame as the lead singer for Kay Kyser's band in the 1930's, recently passed away this April. She was 81.

Her parents, Dormer and Gertrude Talbot Simms came to Pampa in 1905 and established Pampa's first restaurant, Simms Sweet Shop.

While with Kyser, she made three films with his orchestra which were "That's Right, You're Wrong"; "You'll Find Out"; and "Playmates".

She also stared in "Here We Go Again" which also stared Fibber McGee and Molly and Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy; "Broadway Rhythm" with George Murphy and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra; "Shady Lady" with Charles Colburn; and "Night and Day" with Cary Grant portraying composer Cole Porter.

Simms appeared regularly on the "Hit Parade" performing such songs as "Don't Ever Change" and later had her own radio show, "The Ginny Simms Show".

Because of her commitments to the show, she could not travel overseas to entertain the troops but she entertained hospitalized veterans around the United States.

She became interested in being a decorator and a developer when she married millionaire Hyatt R. Von Dehn, who started the Hyatt hotel chain. Simms decorated some of his first hotels as well as their Beverly Hills homes until their divorce in 1951

After a brief marriage to oilman Robert Calhoun in 1953, Simms returned to the stage for a few years.

Later on, she married her husband of 32 years. Washington State Attorney General, Donald W. Eastvold Sr. in 1962.

In addition to Eastwood she is survived by two sons by Von Dehm, Eastwood's five children, and 13 grandchildren.

Simms, who was born in San Antonio in 1913, died of a heart attack at the Desert Hospital in Palm Springs, California

General Notes: After George graduated from Portales High School in Portales, New Mexico at the age of 16, he attended New Mexico Military Institute completing a 2 year course of study in 1920 or 1921. NMMI, which is located in Roswell, New Mexico, offered then and as it continues to do, college preparatory curriculum. George next studied law at the University of California and passed the New Mexico Bar in 1925, just prior to marrying, Lila Simms. George began his career as a lawyer with his father George Sr. in Roswell, New Mexico. They shared office until 1930, when George Jr. relocated to Lovington, New Mexico. Lea County was becoming known for its' oil and gas industry and George had had a lifetime interest in petroleum exploration and wanted to become involved in the industry. While in Lovington, George was elected District Attorney for the 5th Judicial District which included the counties of Lea, Chaves, and Eddy, thus elected officials could live in any of these counties but George felt residence in Eddy County would be more appropriate, so in 1933 he and Lila and two daughters, Jane and Ann, moved to Carlsbad. They continued to reside in Carlsbad until 1960, with the exception of 2 and one half years during the Second World War, when George served his country as an attorney for the Office of Price Administration. Commonly referred to, in those years, as the OPA. He came to really loathe the job because it involved having to prosecute ordinary, honest and good people who were forced to use the black market to obtain supplies and products to carry on their businesses, in order to feed and clothe their families. There were, of course, exceptions.

In 1945, the Reese family returned to Carlsbad where they remained until George was elected as District Judge of the Fifth Judicial District in 196, at which time he and Lila moved to Roswell. George served in this capacity for the next 10 years. He was considered one of the best judges and earned the respect of attorneys throughout the state. He died in Roswell in 1984.
