Thelma Vivian Frame
March 25, 1923 - November 18, 2015

Service to be held: Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m.

Thelma was born March 25, 1923, at Faith, SD, to Chester and Kate (Spilman) Johnson. She shared her childhood with three brothers and three sisters. Thelma attended grade school at Mud Butte Rural School, graduating from Faith High School in 1940. She went on to Spearfish Teaching College for one year, and in 1941 changed her last name to Frame, when she and Jim were united in marriage. They first lived eighteen miles south of Dupree on the old Frame place along Rattlesnake Creek before moving into town in 1945. Thelma taught at various country schools and at Dupree Grade School before beginning her federal postal career in 1950. She worked in the Dupree Post Office for 31 years, retiring as postmaster in 1981.

Thelma had an enduring drive to serve her community and to learn about the world around her. She had a profound love of books and was particularly interested in preserving Ziebach County history. Thelma was active in a number of civic and community groups, including the Dupree Community Club, the Ziebach County Historical Society, and the Dupree School Alumni group. Plays, hometown talent shows, and the Pioneer Days celebration were a few of the Dupree Community’s fun events that she was involved in. One of her most satisfying endeavors was helping to compile what has come to be known as the “Blue History Book,” a history of Ziebach County that was published in 1982. She also researched and compiled several books of Dupree-area historical newspaper articles and family history books.

Jim and Thelma retired and moved to Rapid City in 1994. After 64 years of marriage, Jim died in 2005. Thelma later moved to Summerset Assisted Living in 2011, and to the Good Samaritan Center in 2015.
Thelma Vivian Frame, 92, of Rapid City, and former long-time Dupree resident, died November 18, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Center, New Underwood.

Thelma was the proud and busy mother of three boys, Gerald Frame, Gary Frame, and Jimmy Frame, all whom survive her. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Phillip Frame, Tracey Zephier, Shelby Frame, Amy Frame, Marina Camp, and Trygve Frame; four great grandchildren: Cody Frame, Coy Fischer, Cameron Zephier, and Kieran Duffy; and two great-great grandchildren: Cruz Frame and Brinkley Frame. She is also survived by her sister, Beverly (Dan) Lindblom; brother-in-law, Maurice (Jane) Frame; sister-in-law, Vivian Frame, and many nieces and nephews.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Kate Johnson; her husband, Jim Frame; brothers Russell, Daniel, and Kenneth; and sisters, Gertrude Trask and Ethel Lammers.

Obituary of James Burton Frame

James Burton "Jim" Frame, 84, Rapid City, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at Meadowbrook Manor.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at the Pioneer Hall in Dupree, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial follows at the Dupree Cemetery.

There was a prayer service on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Visitation was from Tuesday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel. The family was present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the visitation, and again one hour prior to services on Wednesday at Pioneer Hall in Dupree.

Jim was born April 15, 1921, at Faith, to Floyd and Laura (Bolander) Frame. He grew up 20 miles south of Dupree, herding sheep and tending cattle on the family ranch along Rattlesnake Creek.  He attended White Swan country school and one year of high school in Illinois before graduating from Faith High School in 1940. After his high school graduation, Jim and a classmate, Paul Hennessey, spent the summer traveling throughout the western United States. Jim’s family and friends loved to hear him tell stories about that summer he spent hopping trains, working odd jobs for food, and just being a "hobo," wishing that they, too, could do something as adventurous in their lifetime. Upon his return, Jim served for six months in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the Black Hills.

Jim married Thelma Johnson at Dupree, on Oct. 19, 1941. In their early years of marriage, Jim and Thelma lived on the family ranch. In July of 1945, Jim was called into military service, but the war ended before he was to report to duty. After the ranch sold in the mid-1940s, they moved to Dupree, and Jim operated his own trucking business. He later worked for Wally Knight, building roads and dams. In 1950, he bought a Caterpillar from Wally and began his own construction business. For the next 45 years, he owned and operated a heavy equipment earth moving business. In addition to his construction work, Jim also continued farming and ranching, until he and Thelma retired and moved to Rapid City in 1994. They were fortunate to have spent 64 blessed years of marriage together, and Thelma will dearly miss Jim, especially all those gin rummy games they played.

Jim was a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Dupree School Board, and the Dupree fire department. He was very proud to have served as a board member of Moreau Grand Electric Cooperative for 31 years. He also helped with the Businessman’s Breakfast each year during Dupree’s Pioneer Days celebration. Jim enjoyed traveling, puttering around in the yard and garden, tinkering with machinery, fishing (especially with his buddies at the river on Memorial Day weekend), and watching professional wrestling on TV. He will be remembered for his hard work, honesty, generosity, and quick wit.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Frame, Rapid City; three sons and their wives, Gerald and Phyllis Frame, Whitewood, Gary and Marsha Frame, Boston, Mass., and Jimmy and Diana Frame, Ukiah, Calif.; six grandchildren, Phil, Tracey, Shelby, Amy, Marina, and Trygve; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Coy, and Kieran; one brother and his wife, Maurice and Jane Frame, Lansford, N.D.; one sister, Carol Johnson, Faith; numerous nieces and nephews; lifelong friend, George Lafferty; and Jim’s beloved dog, Pup Dog.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Wallace and Tom Frame.

A memorial has been established to the Pioneer Hall in Dupree.
