THOMAS SPILMAN ANCESTRY 1809-1888

Thomas was the seventh of nine children born to John Spilman (1741-1816) and Ann (Nancy) Penrose.   Thomas would have lived at the White House in Whitton, Lincolnshire, England.  It is even possible that he may have been born in this home.  His father John was both a farmer and Miller there.  The mill had originally belonged to John's father-in-law John Epworth 1724-1775.

Research from Tom Smith: 1861 census - Farmer of 211 acres employing 6 men and 4 boys

The mill was in Mill close, part of Millfield, just to the south west of the village. It was a four sail tower mill with a circular brick body and wooden cap, which contained the windshaft. This enabled the cap to move to present the sails to the wind. When it was demolished the millstones were reportedly taken and used for the raised beds in the garden at Grove farm.

In addition to milling and farming, Thomas and Harriet Spilman owned the sloop "Walcott". It was built when Dan was 6 years old. Dan, no doubt, traveled on this boat along the Humber River. Tom Smith said that Dan's father was, "supposed to have sent him to work on a farm on the North side of the river (maybe with one of his cousins around Goole who were doing well ) but he soon came back as he didn't like some aspect of the job and this is supposed to be one of the reasons he decided to go and see what the New World had to offer. If he did not like it over there ...well, he could always come back....."

In the first letter we have from Daniel Spilman to his brother Tom, he refers to being in Ferriby - perhaps he worked in North Ferriby during this time. In this letter, Daniel says to Tom, "When I was at Ferriby you said you thought I could not earn my meat and clothes and as much pocket money as I was getting with working. " He goes on to talk about how well he is doing in Calamus, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin as if to say he is making out much better than he expected.

According  to the Lincolnshire Archives Office in 2002  the will and probate record of Daniel's father Thomas Spilman (1809-1888) farmer, windmill and boat owner. Tim Smith wrote:
"When he died in 1888 he left gross personal estate worth 5,103 British pounds which, because of inflation in the last 114 years would be worth (amazingly) 325,000 British pounds today which is equal to $510,315 US dollars. He left to his son Dan Spilman in Clear Lake, Iowa 800 British pounds which is worth 51,330 British pounds today, equal to $80,598 U.S. Dollars."

Thomas Spilman married Harriet Aitken on January 13, 1846 in Burton on Stather, England.

Tom and Harriet had ten children.
