From the July 31, 1903 issue of The New York Times:
Meadville, PA, July 29 -- A.B. Youngson, Grand Chief Engineer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, who had been ill with Bright's disease at the City Hospital since June 20, died at 2:40 o'clock this morning. Previous to his death he named M.H. Shay of Youngstown, Ohio as his successor.

Chief Engineer Youngson was born in Pittsburgh March 20, 1840. His first railroad employment was with the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad when he was but thirteen years old. After twenty-four years of faithful service, Mr. Youngson was elected in 1890 First Assistant Grand Chief of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, succeeding to the position of Grand Chief Engineer on the death of Chief P.M. Arthur on the 17th of the present month and holding the position but 13 days. Mr. Youngson was a widower and is survived by three children.

M.H. Shay has been Chairman of the Grievance Committee of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for twelve years, and has been in the railroad business for more than forty years. He is an ardent worker in the Trinity Methodist Church of Youngstown, Ohio, and is a stanch advocate of temperence. His record on the Erie is one of the most remarkable of any of the engineers for the small number of wrecks he has had.

Also:
Cleveland, Ohio, July 30 -- A meeting of the Grand Officers of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers will be held here within a few days to elect a new Grand Chief and Assistant Grand Chief to succeed P.M. Arthur and A.B. Youngson, deceased.

The fact that Mr. Youngson just before his death nominated M.H. Shay of Youngstown as First Assistant Grand Chief will have no effect according to the authorities, as the Board of Grand Officers had no chance to confirm the nomination before the death of the Grand Chief.
