Erie Railroad Biography - Frank Herbert Lee

Frank Herbert Lee (born in Illinois) born May 8, 1859, died November 16, 1929. He married Nancy Jane Winemiller, born February 21, 1884, died June 24, 1926. They had three children: Herbert Homer, Nina Jane and Jessie.

John Wonderly, William Walknetz, F.H. Lee, Ed. Thornton, Frank Riley, and Briney O'Connor, C&E Division engineers, are at West Baden, Indiana, drinking the wonderful waters of that resort, for relief of their various ailments.




From numerous 1915 issues of Erie Magazine:
Chicago & Erie/Marion Division (First District) Engineer F.H. Lee, running engine 2557 with fireman R.R. Lewis, was consistently awarded the Order of the Red Spot during 1915. The Order was an honor bestowed on engine crews who operated efficiently with few engine failures.




From the August, 1923 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers signally honored in June (1923) F.H. Lee of Marion, a retired Erie engineer. Mr. Lee was presented with a badge in recognition of a membership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers extending over a period of more than forty years. In addition he received a paid-up life insurance policy. Until a year ago, Mr. Lee had been on the active service list of this road. At that time he was obliged to retire on account of defective eyesight.

Mr. Lee's railroad career began in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad system at Logansport, IN. In 1875 he became fireman, and in 1885 was advanced to engineer. He left the employ of the Pennsylvania in 1884, moving on to the old Chicago & Atlantic road. He had been in the service of the Erie from that time until his retirement.

Frank H. Lee, retired engineer of Huntington, has entered the Elks national home at Bedfod, Va.




From the January, 1930 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Frank Lee, veteran locomotive engineer who was recently retired on the special alllowance payroll, died at his home in Huntington, November 15 (1929). Frank was one of the old timers, having hired out as an engineer on the old Chicago & Atlantic in 1885.
