Erie Railroad Biography - Garry Van Inwegan


From the July, 1937 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
Garry VanInwegen, veteran engineer of 70 Orange Street, Port jervis, last month rounded out a half century of service with the Erie. Mr. Van Inwegan, who is 70, began work in the carpenter gang on the New York Division in 1887 and the next year started firing. In 1900 he began his career as an engineer on the Erie and since that time he has handled every type of service on the railroad in freight and passenger and has had no accidents involving the train alone. He had the honor of being the engineer on the first commercial freight train to run between Campbell Hall and Highland Mills on what was a part of the Graham line.

New York Division Engineer G.E. VanInwegan of Port Jervis was retired recently under the new Federal Railroad Retirement statutes at age 69 after 47 years, 7 months of service.

Garrie E. Van Inwegen, 79, of Port Jervis, who retired in 1937 as a locomotive engineer after nearly 50 years' service, died October 23 (1946).

He is survived by his wife, a son, two daughters and two grandchildren.
