Erie Railroad Biography - Henry Kreitner

From the April, 1913 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine
A RELIABLE "OLD RELIABLE."
Shown below is a recent photograph of Henry Kreitner, machinist, who entered the service of this Company March 17th, 1873, making his term of service with the "Old Reliable" 40 years last St. Patrick's Day.

Prior to entering the service of this Company he served his apprenticeship at Dempster's Marine Engine Works, Buffalo, N.Y. In the fall of 1874 Mr. Kreitner assisted in applying the first automatic air brakes on engines No. 383 and 384, which were at that time assigned to the Buffalo Division.

On October 15th, 1888, he was appointed air brake instructor of the Buffalo and Buffalo & Southwestern Divisions, with headquarters at Buffalo Machine Shop, in which capacity he served for several years. The brake school was the most up-to-date equipped school at that time in this part of the country, and it was here that he instructed all engineers, firemen and train crews on the Buffalo and Buffalo & Southwestern Divisions and Rochester Division; also all passenger engineers who were then employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company running into Buffalo. On April 1st, 1891, he was promoted to erecting shop foreman at Buffalo Machine Shop under George B. Ross, master mechanic, in which capacity he served six years, and was then promoted to foreman of machine shop, which position he held for a period of seven years, and then was transferred for the purpose of taking charge of the Air Brake Department and as Air Brake Inspector, which position he now holds.

Mr. Kreitner has experienced ups and downs during his past 40 years of service with this Company, and it is safe to say that there never was a more faithful employe, as his past record will show. Mr. Kreitner is a man who has taken the best care of himself and is still in good sound bodily health, and this Company is to be congratulated of having so able and conscientious a man in its employ and one who is well liked by all with whom he comes in contact. We trust that Mr. Kreitner will continue to retain his good health, and thus enable him to further extend his good record and valuable assistance to this Company.
