Erie Railroad Biography - Hiram Maybee



From the July, 1925 issue of Erie Magazine:
The old Jamestown passenger station was abandoned June 1 (1925), the offices being moved to the new temporary structure on West Second Street. The first train to run over Main street was No. 26, June 2, in charge of Conductor T.F. Moynihan and Engineer Hiram Maybee. A number of officials were present.




From the May, 1931 issue of Erie Magazine:
H.P. Maybee, veteran Erie engineer, who runs the Erie Limited between Meadville and Salamanca. His father was also an Erie engineer on the Meadville Division, and his grandfather was the first white settler in Salamanca. Mr. Maybee fired for his father in the late '80s, or until father and son or other relative were forbidden to work together in the same crew. Mr. Maybee has been an engineer for 41 years.

From the August, 1931 issue of Erie Magazine:
Superintendent H.D. Barber has complimented Engineer H.P. Maybee, Fireman J.R. Shields and Conductor G.C. Leonard for discovering a piece of broken rail 26 inches long at Mill Village, PA, when they arrived with train 4 on June 17th (1931). They removed the broken section, spiked it as securely as possible and then held up the ends by hammering stone under it so as to enable them to pull their train over the broken part with slight delay.




From the July, 1932 issue of Erie Magazine:
H.P. Maybee, one of the most widely known engineers in Erie service, died last May at his home, 858 1/2 Water Street, Meadville. he was 67 years of age. he is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. A.W. Carpenter of Meadville, and two granddaughters. He was a member of the Engineers', Firemens', Eagles and Moose organizations. The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, 749 Maple Street, Meadville, and burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry. Mr. Maybee, who formerly lived in Salamanca, was a son of Nick Maybee, also an engineer. Two other Maybees were engineers on the BR&P.
