James M. Hagerty, New York Division
(Cutline on a small photo):
Engine No. 12, in charge of engineer James M. Hagerty, taken at Goshen a few weeks ago. Mr. Hagerty entered the service as a fireman May 20, 1868, was promoted to engineer October, 1873, and has been in the passenger service since July, 1893. He has always made the company's business his business, and it is generally conceded that he has one of the best looking engines on the road.

From numerous 1913 through 1915 issues of Erie Railroad Magazine:
New York Division Engineer J.M. Haggerty (Hagerty), running engine #12, was listed as being in the Order of the Red Spot for numerous months from 1912 through 1915. The Order was an honor bestowed on engine crews who operated efficiently with few engine failures.

From the April, 1917 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
JAMES MAPES HAGGERTY died recently at his home, 74 Murray avenue, Goshen, N.Y. Mr. Haggerty lived to be sixty-eight years of age and resided in Goshen most of his life. He entered the service of the Erie railroad in May, 1868, working for forty-one years as an engineer, and it is said he never had an accident of any kind during his forty-one years of employment. In 1874, Mr. Haggerty was married to Frances L. Coleman, of Goshen, who survives him, with an adopted daughter, Mrs. Florence Mapes Sizoo, of Walden.
