Erie Railroad Biography - J. Von Kaenel


From the Marion Daily Star, October 12, 1899:
Engineer Von Kaenel, running yard engine 691 in the Marion yards, witnessed the attack on a brakeman by hoboes on October 11, 1899. He and a switchman placed the injured man on the engine and took him to the company physician in Marion.

Cincinnati Division engineer J. Von Kaenel was commended for running his engine for 21,306 miles between September 1, 1913 and September 1, 1914 without any engine failures.

John VonKaenel, engineer in Marion yard, and Mrs. VonKaenel, recently made a trip to Oakland, Cal., where they visited their daughter.

Sympathy is extended to John Von Kaenel, engineer in Marion yard, and family on account of the death of Mrs. Von Kaenel at their home, East Center Street, April 20 (1930). A daughter, Emilyn, is employed in the Superintendent's office. Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery, Marion. A solemn high Mass was celebrated by Father R. Von Kaenel, their son.

John Von Kaenel, 74, veteran engineer of 540 East Center Street, Marion, OH., received congratulations from A.W. Cook, road foreman of engines, on his retirement after 54 years of service, 49 of which were as yard engineer. Always regarded as one of the Erie�s most efficient enginieers, Mr. Von Kaenel enjoys the high esteem of his community and fellow workers. His nine children are: Miss Rosemary Von Kaenel, at home; Mrs. Francis Wiloucher of Bucyrus; Mrs. William Zolg of San Leandro, CA; Mrs. Frank Wilmes of the Richland Road; Rev. Father Robert Von Kaenel of Cincinnati; Dr. Joseph Von Kaenel of St. Louis, MO; Harry, public school teacher at St. Henry in Mercer County; and John and George in Chicago.
