Erie Railroad Biography - Michael J. McCarthy


From the October 10, 1890 issue of the Hornellsville Weekly Times:
Engineer M. McCarty is again on duty, having been reinstated, and now makes a solemn vow that he will never again exceed schedule time in the fog.




From the April, 1924 issue of Erie Magazine:
Michael J. McCarthy, for nearly fifty-two years in the employ of the Erie Railroad, died at the Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA, at the age of 73 years. He was ill but a few days. His ailment was bronchial pneumonia.

For thirty-six years he had been an engineer. He had the distinction of being the only engineer on the Susquehanna Division who had covered every run. He was one of the old reliables who handled engines, and was dependable at all times.

He entered the service April 1, 1872 as engine wiper, and was promoted to fireman on May 2, 1876. On April 6, 1887, he was promoted to engineer. On August 17, 1915, he was retired on account of physical disability.
