Erie Railroad Biography - Peter Meuser

PETER MEUSER. Galion, Ohio.
For thirty-four years Mr. Meuser has been connected with the Erie system, and no better proof of his ability and fidelity is needed than to say that he has come to his present high position from the very bottom of the ladder. He was born in Richland County, Ohio, December, 1845, and from the age of 14, when he left school, until 19 he engaged in farming near Galion. He began his railroad career as a wiper in the old Atlantic & Great Western shops at Galion, in 1865, and after two months became hostler, which position he held until 1869, when he was promoted to fireman. His long experience in the handling of engines and his natural ability soon won for him promotion, and after three years firing passenger runs, he was given a freight engine. Then followed fifteen years in that position, when he was promoted to a passenger run, and after six years of faithful and efficient service he was rewarded by his present position as road foreman of engineers.

Mr. Meuser's father was John P. Meuser of Prussia, Germany, who obtained distinction at the battle of Waterloo in June, 1815, and who was presented with a medal for bravery by Friedrich August Herzog, a ruler in his native province. The medal is now in the possession of Mr. Meuser and it is a valued heirloom.

In December, 1875. Mr. Meuser married Miss Harriet E. Ross, daughter of Hugh Ross, foreman of the rail shops of the Erie Railroad at Galion, and who has occupied the honorable position of Mayor of the hustling city of Galion. The first child of this marriage was Anna H., now aged 20; she was educated in Galion, graduating from the High School in 1895 with high honors. Arthur Irwin, the second child, died in 1882, at the age of 18 months. Courtland B., aged 13, and Hugh Ross, aged 10, are now attending school. Mrs. Meuser is a member of Eastern Star, Lodge No. 47. Mr. Meuser was a member of the Board of Education at Galion for six years. He is affiliated with the B. of L.E., No. 16; F. & A.M., No. 414 of Galion; Royal Arcanum and Traveling Engineers' Association of the United States. He owns fine property in Galion and his home is one of comfort and happiness. As befits a man of his high position he is quiet and unassuming, and is regarded by all as a respected and substantial citizen.

From the October, 1910 issue of Erie Railroad Magazine:
The (Galion) shopmen also sympathize with (Clerk to Master Mechanic) H.R. Mewser (sic), whose father died a short time ago. Mr. Mewser was for many years a valued and faithful engineer on the Erie, his last run being Nos. 15 and 16. In the death of Mr. Mewser, the children have lost a good father, the citizens of Galion, a good citizen, and the Erie Railroad boys a kind and generous friend.

Excerpts from the Death Certificate:
Peter Meuser died Aug. 22, 1910 of exhaustion following an operation to remove a stone from the urinary bladder. He was born Dec. 30, 1845 to John Mueser and Catherine Swain. Informant was H.R. Meuser of Galion.
