Erie Railroad Biography - William N. Neubeck


William N. "Bill" Neubeck (Jr.) of Fredonia, formerly of Oak Street, South Dayton, NY, passed peacefully on Tuesday (August 9, 2011) at the Lake Shore Nursing Home in Irving, NY. He was 91. Born in Angola, NY, on September 28, 1919, he was the son of William N. Sr. and Florence (Cramer) Neubeck.

Bill was a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served in both the 730th and 791st Railway Operation Battalions in Persia (now Iran), responsible for getting supplies to Russia during World War II. Earning the rank of Tech. Sgt., he served from January 1942 through August 1945. He received the European African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and medals from the Russian Federation commemorating both the 40th and 60th anniversaries of the "Victory in the Great Patriotic War."

He married Alice McConnell on Nov. 10, 1945 in Meadville, Pa., and they moved to South Dayton in 1948, where he continued his railroad career with the (then) Erie Railroad. He was the station agent, and early on, telegrapher there until his retirement in December 1980.
