1885-1905 CHICAGO & ERIE OPERATING EMPLOYEE PERSONNEL ABSTRACTS
Not technically rosters, but fascinating reading nonetheless. The transcriptions indexed here are taken from a bound volume of personnel record abstracts for 452 operating employees (engineers, brakemen, conductors, switchmen and train baggage agents are the major job categories found here). Included in the information are a variety of infractions, the more serious of which would require the responsible man to march in front of the Trainmaster, Master Mechanic or Division Superintendent for a "chewing out." In worst cases, men were summarily fired (especially those inciting others to "disloyalty" during the labor unrests of July, 1894). Another interesting feature is the roller-coaster employment of low-seniority men, who were laid off the moment that traffic levels dropped. My thanks to Nick Pappas who generously loaned a complete stranger (me) this one-and-only historical volume for transcription.
1941-1952 MARION DIVISION ROSTERS (HUNTINGTON, IN)
These rosters were compiled from advertising rosters published in Huntington, Indiana in the years stated and list employees who worked on the Chicago to Marion Division and in the Huntington, IN yard. The indexes below were transcribed from those rosters (publisher unknown) with the exception of 1941. The 1941 index was compiled from two competing rosters that were both dated January 1, 1941 (although the secondary roster contained employees who began service through September, 1941). The usual caution exists with these rosters in that correct spelling was not always adhered to. In fact, there are even variations in last name spellings between the two 1941 rosters (in these cases, I have listed both spellings). A second index for each year below contains the names of Division "Honor Roll" employees who retired within the 12 years preceeding each roster year. (PHOTO LEFT-William V. Jamison, Marion Division Conductor, who retired in 1938)
