Erie Railroad - Shin Hollow Accident, 1881

From the April 12, 1881 Issue of the Port Jervis Evening Gazette:

A Brakeman Crushed to Death at Shin Hollow this Morning

Frank Ellis, oilman on conductor Ira B. Smith's extra 35, Ronk engineer, was killed at about 1:45 this morning at Collin's Switch at Shin Hollow, a few miles east of this village.

The train was coming down the mountain at about 20 miles an hour, when a train was noticed ahead, and brakes were called for, which reduced the speed to from eight to 10 miles an hour, so the train men testified. The brakes were soon whistled off, when the train was run into by engine 532, Warren Mercereau engineer with S. Sharp, Conductor. The snow and rain were falling there, and it was impossible to see far ahead. The crash broke up the caboose and the car next to it. Ellis was standing between the caboose and the car, and was crushed to death. After the collision his body was found lying between the two tracks, lifeless. The limbs and body were terribly crushed. No one else was hurt. The track was blocked about four hours.

The body of Ellis was brought to his home on Jersey Avenue in this village. An inquest was held today by Justice Cox, which resulted in a verdict in accordance with the facts above given. Ellis was aged about 25 years, was married, but leaves no children.
