ONSLOW COUNTY CEMETERIES:

Sarah Whaley Cemetery

Take Hwy 258S to I.A. Taylor Road. turn right and go approx 1 mile. Church is located on the left side of road.

The cmty.is adjacent to that but it was founded & called "The Sarah Whaley Cemetery", w/o Levi J. Whaley. This cmty is connected to & contains "many" family names of people who originated a church across from the cmty. The church services were initially held in a one-room school house there. The Hargett family belonged to it and offered the land at Hargett's Crossrd. for a new church building that was built there by W.I.T.Smith & his brother or son Robert Smith, both carpenters. WIT Smith helped Levi J. Whaley start this church & preached in the new building, the first sermon, when it opened. He also started the Sandy Plains Free Will Baptist Church & was the minister (Elder) there for many years. This church at Hargett's Cross Rd. is a Free Will Baptist Church and has been added to several times. I have a copy of the History of that church. My understanding is that initially the First Church of Christ group was not connected to the cmty at all. I do not know if that has changed. The William Ivey Thomas Smith discussed here had a daughter Mary Winifred Smith who married James Henderson Hill of Lenoir Cnty. They were the parents of my father C. C.
