Civil War Service:

1. Lewis Reed Stahlman A > Son of Samuel > John Stahlman

Lewis served as a private in the 148th regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

2. Harrison Stahlman A > Son of Samuel  > John Stahlman

Harrison was killed in action at Dallas, Georgia on May 27, 1864. He was a sergeant in Company C, 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He enlisted September 16, 1861.

3. Solomon Jr. Stallman B > Son of Solomon Sr. > John Stahlman

D. Lobb has his widows Civil War pension papers.

He is buried at the National Cemetery in Vicksburg. His grave stone is still legible. He died of dysentery on February 17, 1863.

She notes that there is a memorial marker in the Upper Richwoods Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa next to his wife's grave. One of his daughters was married to a Rizor.

4. John L. Stahlman C> Son of John S.  > John Stahlman

John L. Stahlman served in the Civil War in Company I of the 148th Regiment. He had a rough time serving with the Army of the Potomac, being was wounded in the head and ankle at Gettysburg on July 3 after being wounded in the thigh at Spotsylvania/Po River in May, 1864 (they left the musket ball in his abdomen which may have led to him dying of "cancer" in 1885.) He was also injured at the siege of Petersburg when a cartridge in his breach-loaded rifle exploded and injured his right eye. He got a 15-day furlough, went home, and was declared a deserter when he didn't return to his unit. After President Lincoln offered to pardon those deserters who returned to their unit, John met up with his unit on about 19 April 1865 (after Appomattox Court House). John lived another 20 years, though he had stomach and intestinal problems for the rest of his life. He died of stomach cancer in 1885, which eventually was considered service related.

5. John H. Shick D> Son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Mohney) Shick. His second marriage was to Sophia Rinard. Sophia was the daughter of Reuben and Angeline (Stahlman) Rinard. Angeline was the eldest daughter of Jacob and Anna Maria (Reed) Stahlman. Jacob was the son of John Stahlman.

John served in Company C of the 78th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer infantry from 1861 - 1862.

6. William D. KnappE >Brother to Mary Ellen Knapp, the first wife of William Henry Stahlman. William Stahlman > Benewell > Jeremiah > John Stahlman. 

William Knapp was recruited in Brookville, Pennsylvania by Captain Evan R. Brady into the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Corp, Company K. He was captured at the "Battle of the Wilderness" and held at Andersonville. He survived and later died in 1913.

7. Elijah Bish > Father to Lydia Ann Bish, the second wife of William Henry Stahlman. William Stahlman > Benewell > Jeremiah > John Stahlman.

Elijah and William Knapp served together as privates in he 11th Pennsylvania Reserve Corp, Company K. Elijah's name is on the Pennsylvania monument in Gettysburg, Pa.

8. Theodore Harrison Mumford369  > Father to Delia Mumford who was married to Emanuel Stahlman (superscript references Theodore's wife's obituary where his service during the civil war is mentioned).  Emanuel Stahlman > Columbus > Gabriel > John Stahlman

Theodore was a civil war veteran. He enlisted in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1862 and was mustered into service at Meadville on February 21, 1863, in Company B, 18th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalrymen, and was honorably discharged July 21, 1865, at Cumberland, Maryland. Mr. Mumford died at the age of 68.

9. George D. Hamm399  > Husband to Caroline Stahlman. Caroline > Samuel > John Stahlman.

George enlisted in Company C, 78th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in August 1861. He served as color guard sergeant at quite a few battles, notably Stone River, spending three years with that unit. After the war he was made the custodian of the Regimental Colors which were lost in a fire that almost cost him his life trying to save it from the flames. 10. George William StahlmanF,G  > George > Lewis > John > John Stahlman

George served in company B, 78th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry, according to Pension Files of Civil War Veterans Who Served Between 1861 and 1900. That paperwork shows his DOD as May 1, 1902. His son Harvey was a WW I veteran, his grandson Junior, served in WW II, his grandson Paul, in the Korean war, and great-grandson Steve, in Vietnam.

11. Adam Mohney554  > Adam was married to Emma J. Schuckers. Emma > Daniel > Henry Schuckers. 

Henry Schuckers was married to Nancy Ann Stahlman, a daughter to John Stahlman. 

Adam served in the Pennsylvania 78th regiment, Company C, as a private, enrolling on August 29, 1861 at the age of 19.

12. William Royer695  > William was the father-in-law to Ora Belle (Stahlman) Royer. Ora Belle > John > John L. > John Jr. John Stahlman.

"He served gallantly in the civil war, being a member of Co. B, 135th Regiment Pa. Infantry, and several of his comrades followed his body to its last resting place in the M.E. cemetery at Clarington, among whom were Comrades John Coon, John Agnes, Wm. McKendree, A. J. Reardon, Harry and L. R. Warner." - Unknown Newspaper clipping hand dated 1915.

13. Solomon Stahlman > Son of Simon Stahlman > Solomon Stallman > John Stahlman.

Solomon served with the 135th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company B, as a private August 14, 1862 to May 24, 1863, 22 years old at the time. He also enlisted on March 26, 1864 in the 4th Pennsylvania Calvary/64th Volunteers/ Company A and mustered out on July 1, 1865.

14. George W. Stahlman > Son of Simon Stahlman > Solomon Stallman > John Stahlman.

George enlisted on March 31, 1864 as a private in the 4th Pennsylvania Calvary/64th Volunteers Company A, 21 years old at the time. He died in the U.S. General Hospital in City Point Virginia, on January 5, 1865 and is buried in Calvary Corps Cemetery (Section E, Site 4,000) there.

15. John Henry Stahlman > Son of Simon Stahlman > Solomon Stallman > John Stahlman.

John enlisted in the 4th Pennsylvania Calvary/64th Volunteers/Company A on March 26, 1864, 20 years old at the time. He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate on May 19, 1865.

16. Jeremiah Mowrey770  > Father-in-Law to Charles King Mohney. Charles Mohney > Emma Schuckers > Daniel Schuckers > Nancy Stahlman > John Stahlman.

Jeremiah Mowery was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company B, 57th Infantry.

17. John I. Barr1036  > Married to Mary (Reitz) Barr. Mary's brother Samuel Sigworth Reitz was married to Susannah Stahlman. Susannah > Gabriel > Simon > Solomon > John Stahlman

John served in the 105th regiment as a private and was highly esteemed by his service comrades and neighbors. He was a GAR member.
