Albert Rowser, who had been driving the Lauderbaugh-Griest truck in a circle around Punxsutawney, which includes delivery of goods in Worthville, for years, one of the Company’s best and most faithful drivers, was at the wheel entering Worthville. The little Stahlman girl, who weighs about 115 pounds, and another girl asked him to haul them a short distance in the village, and he, knowing them, and most everyone in Worthville, broke not only the company regulations, but the law, out of kindness, permitted them to ride on the side of the big machine. After a short distance one of the girls said "that is where we wanted to get off." Pointing to a house a short distance back. He slowed his machine preparatory to stopping, and heard a scream. He slammed on the emergency and looking back saw Helen lying along the road. She had jumped before he could get his machine at a standstill, tripped leaving it and alighted on her head.

He and the girl friend rushed to the child’s assistance. It was apparent that she was badly injured, and as his truck was too ponderous for a quick trip to the Adrian hospital, a neighbor of the Stahlman’s loaded the unconscious girl in his machine and rushed her here.

Her condition was such that it was impossible to x-ray her. She was given every possible treatment, but failed to respond. During the afternoon and night she was delirious at times requiring four persons to hold her in bed and this morning her lungs collapsed and for a time life was kept in her by artificial respiration. She seemed a little easier after this treatment, but succumbed this morning.

23B. Helen Stahlman Will Be Laid To Rest Next Sunday

Girl companion on Fatal Ride Says Helen Fell From Side of Truck (Publ ? November 21, 1934)

Funeral services for Helen Stahlman, of Worthville, killed in jumping from the Lauderbaugh-Griest truck in Worthville Wednesday afternoon, will be held Sunday afternoon beginning at 2 o’clock in the Evangelical Church in Worthville. Rev. Garland will officiate.

The deceased was born in Worthville December 9, 1918, a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Grover Stahlman and had lived her entire life there. She was a member of the Evangelical Church and beloved by all who knew her. Her tragic death is sincerely mourned.

She is survived by her parents, five brothers and sisters; Clyde of Creekside; Blaine Stahlman and Mrs. Gene Kiehl of Worthville; and Earl and Albert, at home.

A new version of the accident was given by Helen Keough, 15, who was on the truck when her little friend was injured. She said she and Helen were walking from their homes about a mile out of Worthville to the  home of Rev. Garland where Helen was going to take a guitar lesson, having the guitar with her at the time.

They got on the running board of the machine and where Helen met with the accident which caused her death, she fell from the truck, not being able to hold on securely with the instrument in her arms.

Mr. Rauser did not know of it until she screamed. There was no implication that the driver was in any way to blame, other than not obeying the law which provides that trucks shall not carry passengers, or in defying the sign on the truck which said “No Rides”.

81 b. Raymond Clark Stahlman from Find a Grave (there is a photo)

Birth: Sep. 24, 1917, Fisher, Clarion County, Pennsylvania Death: Nov. 17, 1997, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado

Raymond "SARGE" Stahlman was born in the coal mine regions of Pennsylvania. He served proudly in the United States Army where he reached the rank of Sergeant...hence his nick name of "Sarge". He was a very strong man who worked hard all of his life. To people who knew him, he was a human being that would go way out of the way to help anyone that needed help. Hundreds of people were helped by him who probably did not even know his name...pulling them from ditches in a snow storm or changing a tire that needed to be done. "Sarge" was one of the most inventive men around when it came to building or fixing anything. He worked as a roofer, welder, concrete pourer....you name it.. he could do anything with his hands and back. He helped his wife Veva raise three children. We all earn things in the future by what we do on this earth, and he has earned anything he would ever want by this. He also had a softness for his Grandchildren that was above nearly anyone. He left this world a much better place for the people he knew.

87. Cornelius Stahlman    From The Jefferson Democrat 12/31/1908 via Kathy Stahlman

Prominent Resident of Pinecreek Township Closes a Useful Life.

On Monday night, December 21st, there passed from this life a man well and favorably known throughout this community for his sterling worth, his calm Christian character, and his acts of kindness.  Cornelius Stahlman, the subject of this sketch, was a man whose life was in many ways a living expression of the gospel principles which he professed.  He was born in Northumberland county, Pa., January 7, 1834, and had therefore passed the poet’s “three score years and ten,” at his death, his exact age being 74 years, 11 months and 14 dears of his life he was a resident of Pinecreek township, moving hither from Clarion county.  He was successfully engaged in farming and lumbering.  He was one of a family of ten children, three girls and seven boys, of whom only two brother of the deceased remain.  They are William, of Ringgold, Pa., and Dewalt, of Fisher, Pa.

More than half a century ago he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Gaupp.  The Master’s blessing was upon their union and their years together present a picture of wedded happiness and peace never excelled.  There survive him, his wife and four daughters, Mrs. R. D. McNeil, of Brookville; Mrs. W. C. Kuhn, of DuBois; Mrs. G. W. Shaffer, at home; and Mrs. U. S. Shoffstall, of Brookville.

Mr. Stahlman was especially eminent for his quiet home virtues.  In his life in his family circle he was for all an example of kindness, love and forbearance.  His neighbors will remember him for his readiness to aid in any way possible, whoever might be in distress.  The number of souls who have been influenced to “enter the kingdom” simply by personal contact with this open hearted, sincere man, only eternity will reveal.  He was a man of prayer.  Living as he did in close communion with his Savior, he had seemingly learned the language of petition and supplication as few have done, and to hear him speak with his Master was itself an inspiration.  In his prayers as in his life, he was unselfish, and as one who knew him intimately has said “There is many a one whom Uncle Neel Stahlman has literally prayed into Christ.”

In his church relations, as might be expected in a man of such characteristics, he was a power for good.  Always faithful and willing to serve in any capacity, the past records of the Brookville Lutheran church show him to have been a most active and loyal member.  He held office again and again, elected thereto by a congregation who felt that whatever Brother Stahlman undertook to do would be well done.  It was only when the weight of years and approaching weakness became heavy upon him that his service in an official capacity could no longer be had, but he ever kept up an active interest in all affairs pertaining to the church of Christ, and with his influence, his prayers, his means, and whenever he could with his presence, he loyally labored for and aided the church he so much loved.  With a fidelity and zeal that is rare in these days of easy-going church membership he often attended the communion and regular church services when his physical condition was one of great weakness and suffering, especially in the last weeks of his life.  And when he could no longer attend, in spirit and prayer he still worshipped with his brethren though confined to his room.

He gave every evidence in word and deed of a life of true faith in and love for Christ, and though he neither claimed to be nor was perfect and faultless, yet of him it could be truthfully said, as of few others, he “walked with the Lord” and he “died in the Lord.”  So he passed away peacefully without a struggle, falling asleep in Jesus with humble childlike trust and confidence.

The funeral was held at his late home in Pinecreek township on Thursday afternoon, December 24th.  Revs. Frey and Adams officiated.  A large number of friends and acquaintances attended, for he was known and loved among a wide circle of men and women.  Interment was made in Brookville cemetery.  “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth:  Yea, saith the spirit that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them.”

91. Nancy Catherine (Stahlman) Miller Unknown newspaper and date:

copied from obituary clipping from H. W. Buckner in the late 1960's - early 1970's

Nancy Miller, an old and respected citizen of Randolph County, died at her home near Trinity Church after a protracted illness of several month's duration, October 16, 1905.

Nancy (Stahlman) Miller was born August 6, 1824, in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. She was married to Jacob S. Miller September 4, 1844, and was the mother of thirteen children, three of whom died in infancy. All of the children, except the oldest child, William, reside in Randolph County. William lives in Pennsylvania, but attended his mother's funeral, having come in time to see her before she died.

Grandma, as she was commonly called, seems to have been blessed singularly, for even though she had passed her 81st birthday, she was able to do all of her house work until about a year ago. Then her daughter, Mrs. Nannie Rutledge, moved into her home with her and tenderly cared for her until her death. There had been no deaths in her immediate family for 48 years, the last child having died in  1857.

Besides the ten children, she leaves an aged husband to mourn his loss. For over 61 years they have walked the pathway together. Many have been the sorrows and difficulties they have met, but, hand in hand, they have overcome all.

May God's richest blessings rest upon "Uncle Jake" in his deep sorrow.

Grandma professed Christ in early life and united with the Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania. She lived a true, devoted Christian life. She was a loving, devoted companion, a kind, painstaking mother, and an upright and honored neighbor. Although she is gone from us, we feel that her mantle has fallen on her children, most of whom are devoted Christians.

The funeral services were conducted by the writer to a large and sympathizing congregation of friends at Hickory Grove Church, near Darksville, where her body was tenderly laid to rest.

May God's Blessings rest on all the bereaved ones.

KOYL SCRAPBOOK OBITUARIES 1916

Our people were greatly surprised last Saturday morning to learn that Frank Stahlman had suffered a stroke of apoplexy during the night.  Mr. Stahlman had been in Shepherd Friday afternoon and while complaining of a severe headache which had been bothering him considerable of late, seemed to be in ordinary spirits and health.  He secured some medicine of one of the local physicians and went home and was seen by passerbys during the early evening.

His family were all at Houghton Lake, where he has a summer cottage and Mr. Stahlman was alone.  Ernest Arduer, who has been buying stock with Mr. Stahlman, called there between eight and nine o'clock Saturday morning and when he failed to get a rely when he rapped at the door started to investigate and on looking into the bedroom window saw Frank on the bed, but could get no response, so broke in the window.  He found Mr. Stahlman suffering from a stroke of apoplexy and immediately summoned medical aid.  everything possible was done but he never regained consciousness and died early Monday morning.

"Frank" as everybody knew him had a host of friends and was noted for his kindly spirit and generosity.  His untimely death was a sad blow to the community.

95. Harry Stahlman From: http://www.mindspring.com/~pjhenry/Documents/  Patrick J. Henry

Clarion, Sept. 21. - Harry Stahlman, 10 year old son of Dr. Harry Stahlman, prominent Clarion citizen, was drowned in the Clarion dam near the water station late Saturday afternoon. This is the first victim claimed by the new dam, with its precipitous banks and deep water.

Owing to the nature of the country flooded by water in the construction of the new dam, which is 11 ½ miles long, the dam has no beach in all its 23 miles of shore line, with but few exceptions, and every man, woman and child in this entire section have been warned or know of the dangerous condition of its shores.

Young Harry Stahlman and his brother, Donald, after assisting their mother with the work around the house, asked permission to go to "Wilson’s Woods" and play awhile. The permission was gladly granted, as the parents were always anxious that the boys should play and study in these beautiful woods, which almost adjoin their home, rather than play around the hot, dusty and dirty streets of the town.

Harry then, taking his Boy Scout hand ax and accompanied by his younger brother, Donald, walked to the woods shortly after 3 o’clock P. M. After playing there awhile, Donald says that young Harry proposed going to the water works station and watch the water and dam from that point. The boys did this and playing along the way as they walked down the steep path to the river.

Arriving at the river, they walked out the narrow boat landing below the water works and then came back to the shore and took off their shoes and stockings and sat on the landing with their feet dangling in the cool water. After awhile Harry climbed up and sat on the railing of the narrow boat landing and swinging his feet back and forth, sat there talking to Donald sitting below him. All at once Harry slipped from the railing and fell into the water, between the landing and a stone retaining wall which had been built along the shoreline at that point.

Donald says that his brother went down and down and down, finally coming back to the surface, grasping at the slippery stones and debris trying to keep above water, which at this point, only a few feet from the shore, was 25 feet deep.

Grasping, and his tiny hands slipping off the slippery stones and rocks, he valiantly tried to keep afloat, and while he was able to swim some, it is thought that the sudden shock of falling into the water, so benumbed the boy that he swallowed immense quantities of water filling his lung space almost instantly.

Donald kept calling to Harry to come near to the landing so that he could reach out and save him, but little Harry was unable to do so and sank again. Calling to some men laboring near; screaming to his brother; again calling to the men who were within a few hundred feet, but unable to hear the lad on account of the noise of the water station, Donald finally left his brother and ran to the pump station for aid, bringing back with him John Meisinger, who called other men and they attempted to locate the body or give what assistance they could.

In the meantime some one had phoned Dr. Stahlman at his office to come to the water works station at once but would not tell him why he was wanted so urgently. Suspecting that something had happened, the doctor insisted on being told and when the message came, "Your boy has been drowned in the dam," Dr. Stahlman started from his office on Main Street, running as rapidly as possible and with never the least cessation, distracting all who were coming with him, reached the river banks before the body of his son had been recovered and within a very short time after the accident had taken place.

Urging the men to get pipes and bend hooks on them to grapple for the body, Dr. Stahlman was almost frantic with grief. Finally Walter W. Wilson started removing his clothes preparatory to diving for the body. He was dissuaded in this effort against his own will, but it was pointed out that this particular place had been used as a dumping ground for an immense quantity of old wire and cable, that the possibilities were that the body was already entangled in the wire and that he would likely be entangled himself and be unable to reach the surface.

After grappling with hooks and poles for a while, ex-Sheriff Les Carson stripped and said he was going to dive for the body. Raised along the Clarion river and a most expert swimmer and diver in his younger days, the sheriff prepared against the advice of many to begin searching the riverbed for the body. As he prepared himself to search, Walter Wilson also prepared to assist him and working together they both dived and searched many dozen of times before locating the body; one resting while the other was down.

At last Carson had been under so long that people began to be alarmed, thinking that he had become entangled in the wires. He came to the surface and announced that he had found the body among the wires that he had lifted it about five feet after almost superhuman effort, but had to come to the surface for air. Mr. Wilson immediately dove where Carson had located the body and in short time was back with the body in his arms.

Willing hands assisted him and shortly the body was on the bank where Dr. Long, partner of Dr. Stahlman, was ready to begin methods of resuscitation; the lungs were quickly emptied of water and artificial respiration began; quantities of hot water from the station nearby were brought and the stripped body wrapped in warm and hot cloths in a vain attempt to restore life.

After working there for quite awhile, the body was carried to the pump station where before a hot gas fire, in a warm room, the work was again carried on in the most approved method of restoring from drowning. Hoping against hope and still with the thought that bodies had been restored to life after working for a period of six hours, the doctors and volunteer assistants kept valiantly on with their struggle.

An automobile was secured and the body placed in it and with Dr. Stahlman and Rev. Wayland Zwayer as his assistant, the started to the office of the doctors, never ceasing for a moment the work of restoration.

Arriving at the doctor’s office electric heating pads were placed all over the body and every method known to modern science attempted for a long time, before they would give up hope and pronounce the boy dead.

While the boy was but 10 years old, he was exceptionally well developed for a boy of his age and looked more like a lad of 15 that one of 10. He was a favorite with his fellow schoolmates and was popular all over Clarion. Every spare minute of his time was occupied by reading books and even young as he was, he was planning for his future life.
