Death of Columbus Stahlman
Columbus Stahlman, a former
resident of Knox Township, Jefferson County, and well known to many of our
readers, died at his home in Sandy Township, Clearfield County, very
suddenly Sunday night or early Monday morning of this week. Concerning his
death Tuesday morning’s Courier said:
Shortly after 2 o’clock yesterday
morning (January 25, 1909), Columbus Stahlman, a prominent citizen of
Sandy Township, died at his home, 805 South Brady Street. Death was very
sudden and came unexpectedly after he had retired in apparently good
health and spirits, and was probably caused by an attack of heart trouble.
The deceased had attended the
revival services in the Mt. Zion M. E. Church and returned home with his
wife and talked with her until after midnight Sunday night without
displaying any signs of approaching death. At 2 o’clock Mrs. Stahlman
was awakened by her husband, who seemed to be in great agony. The
neighbors were notified and medical aid summoned, but a physician arrived
too late, death having already occurred. The exact cause of death is not
known but heart trouble is supposed to have entered into the case. Several
weeks ago he suffered an attack of grip but it was thought he had
completely recuperated from that sickness.
The deceased was 65 years of age
and had lived here several years, coming here from Jefferson County. He
was quite wealthy, owning considerable real estate and farming land in
Kane and this town.

Last Monday morning, arising at
about 4 o'clock, Mrs. James Campbell spoke to her husband several times,
but receiving no answer, approached the beside and found him gasping for
breath and unable to speak. The family were immediately aroused and
a physician sent for, but without avail, dissolution having taken place a
few moments after the departure of the messenger.
The
deceased was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, May 1, 1830, and was
consequently a little over 59 years of age at his death. He was
reared on a farm and received his education in the public schools.
At the time he attained his majority, he emigrated to Jackson county, this
state, where he worked on a farm for two years. In October 1854, he
came to Coe township, being one of the first settlers, and located 240
acres of land, but has since disposed of all but a homestead of 110 acres
on which is a substantial residence and commodious farm buildings.
January
18, 1855, Mr. Campbell was married to Miss Euphemia Neely, in Jackson
county. Eight children were the result of the union, two of whom,
Hattie and Charlie, are dead. The remaining ones are Mesdames O.
Hutchinson, O. C. Stahlman, L. D. Estee and Irad Struble, and Geo. B and
Miss Ella Campbell.
The
deceased has had several offices in township and district, and might have
had anything in a political way he desired, but was not at all ambitious
in that respect although often urged to accept nominations by friends who
recognized his through honesty and sterling worth.
News
of his sudden and unexpected death was received by friends all over the
county, with honest and heartfelt regrets.
Thus
has passed away another of the old pioneers of this section, who did so
much toward making this one of the finest farming tracts of land in the
state. His friends were legion. Enemies he had none. His
advice was eagerly sought in life, by both old and young. His
judgment was acknowledged by all to be mature and sound; his honesty and
integrity unquestioned. His word once given was good as his
bond. He was a man in every sense of the word: there are few like
him and his is sincerely mourned.
The
deceased was a member of the M. E. church, of this village, an earnest
Christian, and carried his religion with him in his every day life. The
funeral was held from the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday, and was one of
the largest ever held here. Many flowers and floral offerings were
brought by sorrowing friends, and the remains were lowered to their final
resting place, while many a tear coursed down the cheeks of those who
seldom give way to such burst of feeling. Rev. C. W. Smith, of Clare,
officiated, assisted by Rev. E. L. Sinclair, and preached a beautiful and
appropriate funeral sermon. Obituary: North Western Tribune, August

Michael R. Stahlman
– The Washington Post
WASHINGTON — The investigating
officer in the 2007 trial of a Marine charged with killing several dozen
Iraqi civilians died Sunday, less than three months after he sustained
head injuries in a non-hostile incident in Iraq's Anbar province.
Marine Col. Michael R. Stahlman, 45 and a Chevy Chase native, died at
approximately 11:24 a.m. October 5, 2008 near his home in Yucca Valley,
Calif.
Stahlman,
a judge advocate and a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in
Annapolis, had returned to the United States for treatment following his
injury. He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground
Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
"He
was a great gentleman, truly," said Dale Saran, a Rhode Island
reservist and attorney who met Stahlman in 1997 while interning at Camp
Lejeune, N.C. "He was my review officer at Camp Lejeune. He was a
real mentor to me the summer I worked for him, just a class act (and) a
very good athlete."
Last
month, Stahlman developed sepsis, a blood-stream infection, as a result of
his head injuries. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences from
friends and acquaintances on a blog dedicated to Stahlman's healing.
"Mike was a truly a stand-out among Marines I have worked with during
my career," wrote one visitor to mikeonthemend.blogspot.com.
"Whenever I asked him for help or advice, he would immediately
respond. It always felt as if he dropped everything else to help me.
Somehow, I feel that is the case with everyone Mike met."
Another writer said Stahlman "was the Marine that I should have
been."
Last month, friends created the Stahlman Family Fund for Stahlman's wife,
Kimberly Stahlman, and daughters McKenna and Piper. Kimberly Stahlman
could not be reached for comment.

George D. Hamm
from
Obituaries from The Clarion Democrat by Sally Jordan Reed pg 112 - 113
George
D. Hamm – January 21, 1915 – In common with many old veterans of the
civil war and numerous friends throughout the county, we bow our head with
sorrow over the departure of our old veteran friend and fellow citizen,
Mr. George D. Hamm, who passed out from this fair land to the fairer one
beyond, in the hospital at Warren, Pa, Wednesday, January 13, 1915.
Mr. Hamm, in his day and generation, gave a distinct service to and
for his home county, for the state and for the country at large. His life
was offered as a willing sacrifice for the preservation of the union and
the perpetuation of our liberty and freedom for all men within our
borders, when on August 29, 1861, he left this county as an enlisted
volunteer in Co. C, 78th Regt. Of Pennsylvania Volunteer
Infantry.
Then
followed three years of service in which he faced all sorts of danger and
endured all sorts of hardships to fully establish this as “the land of
the free and the home of the brave.” This service joined to that of
others settled forever the questions involved in that fratricidal contest.
Mr. Hamm’s service was not given without sacrifice. He left his home
where was wife and children who gave him up for this sacred service, and
he laid on the alter of his country his life, his all. It was accepted,
and through this life itself was not required, the service was effective
in accomplishing the results for the attainment of which it was offered.
He was made Color Sergeant some time previous to the battle of Stone River
and the following incidents told in connection with the colors he bore so
well are taken from the New Bethlehem Vindicator to illustrate how bravely
and faithfully he performed his duties. “It was in the battle of Stone
River that Mr. Hamm first attracted attention of his officers. Col.
Snively ordered a charge, the men hesitated; Sergt. Hamm plunged into the
river and waving the colors, cried, “Come on boys.” They followed, but
Hamm, being far in advance, had the colors shot from his hands. He picked
up the colors which had fallen on the river bank. Looking up, he saw a
fine young southerner of 20 to 22 years, standing behind a tree 60 yards
away. Sergt. Hamm rushed forward, sword in hand, and forced the Dixie
soldier to surrender before he had time to reload his musket.
After
serving his country faithfully and honorably for three years and two
months he returned to Clarion county. The 78th Regiment’s
flag was shot to shreds and was replaced before the close of the war by
another flag. At a regimental reunion several years after the war, Mr.
Hamm was made custodian of the colors. He kept the flag in his home at
Frogtown where he guarded it with sacred care until a few years ago when
one noght he was awakened by the cracking of burning wood. He barely
escaped from the burning building. Reaching a place of safety his first
thought was of the flag – his flag – the flag he carried all through
the dark days of the rebellion. A thousand demons could not have held him
then. He rushed into the building which had become a fiery furnace. He was
rescued – almost lifeless – every hair burned from his head; face
blistered, hands charred.
After
months of suffering, months of tender care and patient nursing, he was
saved to his friends but the flag he loved and for which he had offered
his life on this country’s alter, was no more.” Mr. Hamm was the son
of John and Elizabeth (Bittenbender) Hamm and was born December 9, 1834,
near Brinkerton. In 1855 he was united in marriage with miss Caroline
Stahlman, of near Frogtown, and their union was blessed with nine
children, three of whom preceded him to the other world, and his wife died
a number of years ago. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. T.C.
Wiser, Falls Creek; G.W. Hamm, Enon Valley, O.: Margaret Hamm, New
Bethlehem; T.I. Hamm, Wilkinsburg, Mrs. Frank Hepler of Frogtown, and C.F.
Hamm, Grove City.
The
body of the deceased was taken to the home of his daughter in New
Bethlehem, and from thence to the Leatherwood Baptist Church where
services were conducted by Rev. George Kespelher, and it was laid to rest
with the honors of war, a detail of Sons of Veterans performing the last
service for the old hero.
A
personal word. The last time the writer talked with Mr. Hamm the subject
of religion was mentioned, and in response to the question as to whether
he was a Christian, he replied that he was and that he was trying to lead
a Christian life and expressed his hope for the future as resting in the
mercy of his Savior. Our last recollection of him is that conversation
just prior to his leaving Clarion about two months ago and we could not
help feeling his sincerity.
