819. Dr. Albert Hepler Unknown Newspaper

He moved to New Bethlehem in 1900 and practiced medicine for 40 years. Was president of New Bethlehem Trust Company. Our town and community were shocked Saturday last as word was passed from lip to lip that Dr. Albert J Hepler, New Bethlehem's oldest medical practitioner, had been called from time into eternity. Dissolution came peacefully at 12:45 pm Saturday, November 13, 1926 after eighteen hours of intense suffering caused by embolism.

Friday evening at 7 o'clock, the Doctor was in his office ministering to a patient; at 7:15, he called his son, A.M. to his office and remarked that he was very ill. Dr. Hilton A Wick was hastily summoned and did all in his power to relieve the sufferer. His son, Dr. C. V. had been at Pittsburgh that day and did not arrive home until almost an hour after his father had been stricken. He and Dr. Wick had him removed to his home in Wood Street and Dr. Longwell of Seminole was summoned. All night long the three physicians worked over him, and all next forenoon; but the pale horse and his rider claimed him and medical skill met its Waterloo.

Albert J Hepler was born in Limestone Township, June 6, 1858 and was a son of the late Jesse and Elizabeth (Mohney) Hepler. He received his early education in his district school and prepared himself for teaching. He taught several terms during the winter, working on his father's farm during the summer. He finally decided to enter the medical profession and to that end matriculated in the office of Dr. Johnson of Limestone. After reading for some time under Dr. Johnson, he entered the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, graduating therefrom in June 1886.

After his graduation the Doctor, who had been married in February 1881 to Miss Luella E. Stahlman, located at Hawthorn, this county, where he practiced his profession with signal success for three years. He then located at Fairmount City, Pa., where he practiced eleven years. At the end of that time, 1900, he moved to New Bethlehem where he resided ever since. In all he practiced forty years, and in that time his patients numbered in the thousands. He was widely known as one of the best physicians for fevers in all the country.

Dr. Hepler by strict adherence to duty amassed quite a fortune. He was known as a successful financier as well as a successful physician and was universally loved and respected. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of New Bethlehem and was also affiliated with the following: The Maccabees, the Protected Home Circle, and the Independent Order Odd Fellows. He was also a Director of the New Bethlehem Trust Company, a member of the Bostonia Country Club and alternate surgeon of the P.R. R. The Clarion County Medical association honored him by electing him as its President.

To his union in marriage with Miss Stahlman in 1881, were born seven children, namely: Dr. C. V. Hepler, A. M. Hepler, A. F. Hepler, E. H. Hepler, Mrs. Clarence Lower, Mrs. A. J. Mase, John J. Hepler. John J preceded his father in death in 1914. His wife also preceded him in death, August 28, 1924. All the other children survive. He is also survived by one brother, Raymond Hepler of Hawthorn.

On September 1, 1925 he was married to Mrs. Clarinda Longden of Pittsburgh and the two went to housekeeping in the Doctor's Wood Street residence, this place, where he crossed over at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 7 days. Their married life was very beautiful and happy.

A large concourse of people, friends and neighbors, viewed the body as it rested in his late home amidst a profusion of floral offerings from his immediate family and numerous friends till Tuesday, November 16 at 2:30 at which time services were held there by his Pastor Rev. J W Fraser and his former Pastor Rev. Maxwell Cornelius of Pittsburgh. Mrs. Elma Sulzner of Pittsburgh and Mrs. Charles Fitzgerld of Clarion sang "Abide With Me". Mrs. Sulzner also sang "In The Garden", and Mrs. Fitzgerald "Face To Face". Mrs. L R Himes accompanied them on the piano, at the conclusion of which interment under the direction of Mateer and Heller was made in the local cemetery beside kindred dust.

The following named physicians attended the funeral, the first six named being the pall bearers: I. Dana Kahle, of Knox; B. J. Longwell of Seminole; C. E. Sayers of Hawthorn; Hilton A. Wick of New Bethlehem; Charles Fitzgerald, S. J. Lackey, C. C. Ross and J. T. Rimer of Clarion and F. M. Stahlman of Pittsburgh. Upon graduation from school, Linda went on to be an excellent wife to Jerry Stahlman, and to be the best Mom in the world to her four children.

Linda had a full, rich life which included many hobbies, primarily knitting, sewing, quilting, reading, watching movies, her extreme interest in history and biographies, and travel. She was entirely self-taught in all of her hobbies, and this included knitting and crocheting. Over the years, Linda has made many beautiful gifts for her family and friends.

Linda had many interests including her various hobbies, history, reading everything from histories to biographies, to her love of travel, and playing her various video games. Linda was always encouraging others to take up playing with video games to“stay sharp in the mind.”

Linda will be remembered by all of us for different things, whether it was her sharp sense of style, her crafting and homemaking abilities, her ability to make friends wherever she went of whatever she was doing, but most of all for her positive, upbeatpersonality and her charming smile; She never knew a stranger and was always eager to hear other people’s stories. She will be missed by many.

839. Felix Stahlman Death Notice, 29 Jan 1903, "The Clarion Democrat" (Clarion Co., Pa)

On Saturday, January 10th, 1903, Mr. Felix Stahlman, of near Frogtown, Clarion county, Pa., departed this life. After an illness of exactly one week, Mr. Stahlman passed from time into eternity.

He was born in Schuylkill county, Pa., September 22, 1830. He united with the Reformed church in his youth and ever since the day of his confirmation he evinced a spirit of true faith and Christian fellowship. He loved his church and always managed to get there unless detained by sickness.

On the 3rd day of June, 1852, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Shaffer, and on the 3rd day of last June they celebrated their Golden Wedding. This was truly a great event in the history of their lives. The very large crowd that assembled on that occasion was a mark of the high esteem in which they were held.

To this happy couple was born 9 children, 6 sons and 3 daughters. Two sons and one daughter preceded their father to their future home. The following children are living: Mrs. Amanda Sweitzer, Mr. John J. Stahlman, Jacob Stahlman, Philip Stahlman, Gabriel Stahlman and Mrs. Agnes Hepler.

Mr. Stahlman was a man of integrity and veracity. By his industry and economy he not only acquired a fair share of wealth but was helpful to the needy. He was a highly respected citizen, a good husband and a loving and considerate father. But he had a mine of greater wealth than can be counted in dollars and cents. He raised a family of which he was justly proud. He loved and respected the divine side of life. He feared God and loved his fellow man. In religious matters he was not bigoted, yet he loved his church as he loved no other. He loved and respected his pastor, and always heartily welcomed him to his home. He was no grumbler, no creator of contention, but a lover of peace and unity. As an illustration of his devotion to his church I relate the following incident: The last time he came to church the roads were quite icy. He could not drive on account of his horse being too smooth. Nevertheless he was determined to go to church. He walked, and in going he passed through a field through which flowed a small stream of water. This happened to be swollen to an unusual size. Here he was confronted with a sad disappointment, the stream was too wide for him to cross. He walked up and down but could find no crossing place. With a sad and disappointed heart he turned homeward. But he had not gone far until he heard the sound of the church bell. This was too much for him. Once more he started for the church determined to find a crossing. This time he followed on down the stream until sure enough he found a place he could cross. Now in the path he held to his church to hear the gospel, thinking not that it might be his last opportunity. This proves his steadfastness and the truthfulness of the old adage - "where there's a will, there's a way."

The funeral services were held in the Nevin Memorial Reformed Church at Frogtown, Pa., on Jan. 13th, 1903, at 10 a.m. Interment in the cemetery at the same place. Though the weather was extremely cold, a large number of relatives and friends attended his funeral. The sermon was based on Prov. 10:2 "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, but righteousness delivereth from death." The pastor, Rev. R.F. Gass, was assisted by Rev. Fisher of Shannondale, Pa. May the beautiful life of this sainted father be a powerful incentive to his offspring and to all who knew him, for goodness and purity in the sight of Almighty God.

865. Albert Heintzmann from tributes.com

Albert Heintzmann of Austin passed away peacefully on November 29, 2004, at the age of 74. Love is the only thing we can carry with us when we go, and it makes the end so easy. Al was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle who loved his family with all of his heart and soul, but none of us as completely as our Mom. While our father defied death many times in the past 10 years, he could not, nor did he want to, survive the loss of our mother just 3 short months ago. Though we mourn and grieve his passing, our family takes great comfort in knowing that he and our Mom are together watching over us with all the love they showered us with our entire lives. How incredibly blessed we are as a family.

Left to cherish his life and celebrate his memory are Al’s daughters, Cathie Ogden and her husband John Ogden of Keller, Texas, and Chere’ Heintzmann-Bloomquist and her husband Bob Bloomquist of Austin, Texas; Grand-daughters Meaghan Haslam and her husband Marc Haslam of Austin, and Chelsey Ogden of Keller, Texas; Great-granddaughter Daryn Haslam of Austin; nephew Gary Heintzmann of Houston, Texas and his wife Debbie and children Kevin, Jill and Tracy Heintzmann; his mother-in-law Myra Stahlman of Austin, Texas and his brother-in-law Ted Stahlman of Austin, Texas.

Albert spent his life serving in the United States Air Force – a life he loved and honored. During his tours of duty he supported combat missions over Korea and Vietnam – while finishing his career on board KC-135 and KC-10 tankers. Albert shared his life with many and when it came to people, he knew no stranger and growing up we never knew who Dad would bring home for dinner. Al loved his family and nothing pleased him more than a family gathering, the all-time favorite was to take the family on outings so we could have “fun” whether we wanted to or not. All of us in the family experienced the joy of watching him play Santa over the years or collecting Christmas Trees and gifts to take with him for troops in Vietnam.

Dad always tried to make the holidays magical for everyone. When it came to animals there wasn’t a dog he didn’t love. Especially his faithful companions Mollie and Precious who will miss him greatly. While in the military, Al was recruited by the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League so it was only natural both daughters would learn to play ball. And there was no going easy on us just because we were “girls”. More importantly he taught us to never quit. But he also made sure we knew just how proud he was of us both. Al taught one to cook and one to be fearless. First and foremost, Albert was our Father and whatever magic we had with him, even if it was for just a very short time, profoundly affected us for the rest of our lives. “It doesn’t matter who our father was – it matters only who we remember he was.”

A memorial service for family members will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 3, 2004, in the Chapel of Tarrytown United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be conducted at the National Cemetery, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and will include full military honors for those who have defended our nation. Mr. Moses Slawson, aged 88 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Isaac Covert, 95 Hospital Street, Ridgeway, Sunday morning, June 15, after suffering from a paralytic stroke for a week.

Mr. Slawson was born in Orange county, New York, October 24, 1830, and when a young man came to Jefferson county. He was drafted into the army during the Civil war but was never in actual service as his enlistment took place shortly before the end of the conflict. He was generous and helpful to the needy and poor, establishing a name for himself among the pioneer settlers of Jefferson county as “The Father of the Poor”.

Mr. And Mrs. Slawson reared a large family, there being ten children, six of whom are dead. The four children surviving are Mrs. L. D. Rhines, Mrs. A. R. Richards and Mrs. Isaac Covert, all of Ridgeway, and one son, W. G. Slawson, of Brockwayville. His wife also survives.

896. Wendy Elizabeth Stahlman from the  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pa) - July 4, 1995

WEAVER AND ARTIST, CRASH VICTIM AT AGE 24

At age 24, Wendy Elizabeth Stahlman was directing a nationally known school for fiber arts, doing her own weaving on a loom at home and impressing relatives with the compassion she'd shown for people needing help in Appalachia. The former Hampton resident was also considering full-time volunteer service in the Peace Corps or other assistance groups.

Those plans ended with her death in an auto accident Friday during a storm in Indiana County, but Miss Stahlman accomplished more in her years than most peers could claim. She was a passenger in a car driven by her boyfriend, David Fielder, that struck a van on Route 422, and she died at the scene.

"She had a full life and affected hundreds and hundreds of people," said Kathy Schwietz, who hired Miss Stahlman to run the Deemer House in Smicksburg, Indiana County, in 1993.

"She helped create an environment where there was no hassle or confusion when someone walked in. She was the first person to greet everyone, and she did it with a beautiful bright smile and calmness."

Miss Stahlman was a 1989 Hampton High School graduate and 1993 Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate. Her artistic talent led to her interest in weaving and fiber arts, and she learned everything from shearing sheep to producing mittens for friends and family members.

Even before she graduated from IUP, she was chosen by Schwietz to become first director of the new Deemer House, which was founded as a school where people interested in weaving could take classes for a few days or a week in a serene setting. She coordinated classes, instructors and other details.

Miss Stahlman was also in the middle of an effort with Schwietz called ''Women Weaving the World Together," in which U.S. artists' work was being collected into a ribbon at least 20 kilometers long for shipment to Beijing as part of an international project.

Her parents said the eldest of their five children was always willing to be a little different from her peers and take strong stands. She put on art shows, taught Bible school, traveled with a church group to improve homes in Kentucky and West Virginia and at times stood apart just because of her hair.

Donald Stahlman recalled his daughter serving as a model in high school for a local hair salon and walking into the house one day with an orange Mohawk cut. "When my daughter came home and I saw her, once I got over the initial 'Ooooh' when you first see that, I realized it really looked good on her," he said.

Miss Stahlman had works of art displayed, beginning when she was in high school, at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and IUP.

She is survived by her parents, Donald and Patricia of Hampton; two sisters, Kristin C. and Brenda R., and two brothers, James D. and Michael J., all at home; and her maternal grandparents, Art and Hilda Wollaston of Genesee, Potter County.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in King Funeral Home Inc., Route 8 at Woodland Circle, Hampton. A Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Catherine Church on West Hardies Road in Hampton's Wildwood section. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Catherine's Appalachia Work Group, West Hardies Road, Wildwood 15091.
