904. William John Calhoun from the Brockwayville, Pa Record, April, 1913

AGED RESIDENT CALLED HOME William John Calhoun Dies After an Illness of Three Months, Was 84 Years of Age One of the Original Members of the First Beechwoods Presbyterian Church

William John Calhoun, one of the oldest and among the best known of pioneer residents of the Beechwoods district, died at the home of his son, Charles Edward, in Washington township, last Saturday after an illness of three months' duration. Death was due to the infirmities of old age, the deceased having reached the remarkable age of 84 years and 4 months. The news of the demise of this venerable gentleman was received with deep regret throughout the north end of the county where Mr. Calhoun had spent the greater part of his career and where he was a familiar figure from the time of the early pioneer days.

William John Calhoun was one of the handful of settlers who established themselves in what at that time was a dense wilderness and braved the hardships and trials that only those of the earlier days fully appreciate. He was one of the men, who through persistence and courage, became one of the strong pillars in holding together the little community and assisting in its development to the most beautiful farming centre in the country. For 68 years Mr. Calhoun has been closely identified with the renowned Beechwoods district and its affairs and it is but natural that his demise should cause general regret and sorrow in the county.

William John Calhoun was born in County Donegal, Ireland, in December, 1828, and came to America in 1848, locating for a short time in Philadelphia county. He later came to this section and decided to cast his fortunes with others of his countrymen who had the Beechwoods for their destination and he made his home in that district ever since.

In 1857 Mr. Calhoun was married to Ruth Ross and they established a homestead on what is now known as the old Calhoun place. Eight children, five sons and three daughters were born to them as follows: Charles Edward, of Rockdale Mills, James Ross, of Oklahoma; Andrew Elmer, of Snyder township; Nancy Margaret, who died in 1891, Mary Ida, wife of W. C. Moore, who died in 1897; Carrie May, wife of L. W. Perrin, who died in 1908, John C. of Beechwoods; William Presley, of Kansas. Mrs. Calhoun died 28 years ago. The descendents of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun numbered 43 grandchildren, 33 of whom are living; 4 great-grandchildren, 3 of whom are living. The family throughout is one of the most influential in this section as well as in other places where they have settled.

Mr. Calhoun was a gentleman of high christian ideals and his life-walk was one of courage, uprightness and sterling worth. He united with the Beechwoods Presbyterian church June 12, 1857, and he was always an interested and active member of that congregation. He was one of the small company of christians who established the original church there and he was always a staunch and reliable pillar to the end. Mr. Calhoun followed lumbering and farming as an occupation and his homestead was one of the finest and most hospitable places in the district.

Following the death of Mrs. Calhoun he made his home with members of his family. During the past five years he made his home with his son, Charles, where the sunset of his career dissolved itself into eternal peace and rest after a career that was one of general usefulness and good.

The funeral was held Tuesday, service at the Beechwoods Presbyterian church at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Palmer, of the Falls Creek Presbyterian church, and interment was made in the Beechwoods cemetery. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends at the funeral, many coming from a great distance to pay a last tribute to the venerable pioneer.

912. Elizabeth (Troup) Parris from the Brockwayville Record 22 Aug 1913, p.1

Well Known Lady Called Home Mrs. George Parris Died Sunday Morning in Kane Hospital. Was Popular Woman Funeral Took Place Wednesday Afternoon and Interment was Made in Wildwood Cemetery.

Mrs. George Parris, a well known and highly esteemed lady of this community, died at Kane Summit hospital at an early hour Sunday morning where she had been admitted to undergo treatment for an exopthalmic goiter. Her death was sudden, bot not unexpected, as the grave nature of the disease had made her situation critical from the first. For several months previously Mrs. Parris had been suffering from this malady and last week was in company of her attending physician, Dr. F. R. Humphreys, she went to Kane to enter the hospital. After deliberating with the surgeons there an operation was decided upon as a last resort, and it was accordingly performed Friday. For a time the patient seemed to be getting along fairly well, but the disease had too firm hold upon her constitution and heart failure resulted in her death at four o'clock Sunday morning.

The news of Mrs. Parris' death came as a severe shock to her family and friends here who were hoping for the best as the result of her operation. Mr. Parris, who was in Kane with his wife when she died, brought the body home Sunday afternoon on the B.R. & P. flyer to the saddened household that had so lately bid farewell to the beloved presence of the wife and mother. While her illness was of so grave a nature that little hope was sustained as to favorable results the final termination of an active life in so short a period caused the keenest of grief to the family and associates, who appreciated the worth of this estimable woman.

Mrs. Parris had been a resident of Brockwayville for over twenty years and was closely associated with the social and fraternal interests of the town. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Troup and she was born July 24, 1871, in Londeridge, Whitburn parish, Linlithgow county, Scotland. She was the daughter of David and Elnora Troup, and was one of a large family. Elizabeth Troup resided in Scotland until she was eighteen years of age, when she came to America and made her home at Coal Glen. Here she was united in marriage to George Parris, of this place, January 16, 1891, and shortly after came to Brockwayville to live. Five children, three boys and two girls, were born to this union. These are Joseph H., Collins J., Elnora, Emma and Thomas.

The deceased was a member of the Brockwayville Baptist church during the organization of that denomination here. She was also an active member of the Ladies of the Golden Eagle here and of the Daughters of Pocahantas, of DuBois. In her social and fraternal affiliations Mrs. Parris was always devoted to the interests of her friends and associations and actively engaged in promoting the good of the cause whenever the occasion called her. In her home life she was a loving wife and mother, and the grief-stricken family mourn the loss of the best friend they ever knew.

The funeral was held from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.E. Iams. A large concourse of the friends and neighbors of Mrs. Parris were present to pay the last tribute of love and respect before her mortal remains were consigned to their final resting place. A large delegation of the Odd Fellows lodge of Coal Glen, of which Mrs. Parris is a member, the Pocahontas lodge of DuBois and the Ladies of the Golden Eagles of Brockwayville and Westville were present and after the latter held a ritualistic service at the house they marched in a body to the church preceded by the flower bearers as follows: Misses Flodie McGinnis and Anna Pearson, who represented the K.G.E., Stella Truesdale the Odd Fellows and Florence Kerry the Pocahontas. The floral offerings from the fraternal orders and the friends were beautiful and profuse. The pall bearers were members of the Coal Glen Odd Fellows lodge and were George Moreley, David Harvey, George Mould, Andrew Swanson, Henry Fiddler and Harry J. Barr.

Interment was made in Wildwood Cemetery where ritualistic services were held by the Daughters of Pocahontas over the grave. A beautiful feature of this service was the releasing of a dove over the grave after the casket had been lowered to its final resting place, and the casting of a white blossom by the members upon the bier.

Besides her husband and children Mrs. Parris is survived by the following brothers and sisters: J.H. Troup, of Glen Campbell; David Troup, of Clymer; Mrs. Jessie H. Campbell, of New York; Mrs. Elnora Young, of ...(missing page 8).

1000. Samuel Reitz Obituary from Punxsutawney Area Genealogy and Historical Society

Samuel Reitz, one of the most highly esteemed residents of Coolspring, died at his home Friday afternoon about 1:30 and will be buried Sunday, the services beginning at the late home of the deceased at 2 o`clock. He was about 70 years at the time of death.

The deceased was born in Coolspring, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey Reitz, pioneer settlers of this vicinity, and had spent his entire life on a farm near that village. From early manhood he had worked on a farm and when a young man made two ineffectual attempts to join the Union forces, but was not excepted on account of a disability. On his third attempt he was accepted, but the war was over before he had a chance to participate in actual hostilites.

Mr. Reitz was a man, who held the respect of all who knew him; kindly, sincere, strictly honest, his death is a blow to his hundreds of friends and acquaintances. He is survived by his widow and one son, Sig Reitz, of Coolspring, and two sisters, Mrs. Matthew Cochran, of Oliveburg, and Mrs. John Barr, of Coolspring.
