Agnes and daughter, Clara

Mrs. Agnes Wente of Breda died last week
Had been a resident of the county for more than forty years ... native of Germany.

Thursday evening, March 23rd, at 8 o'clock, occured the death of Mrs. Agnes Wente at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.H. Schafer. The cause of her death was infirmities of old age.

Agnes Balster was born in Lone (Lohne), Oldenberg, Germany, on October 18, 1833, and at the time of her death was 82 years, 5 months and 5 days old. In 1857, she was united in marriage to Carl Joseph Froehle who was drowned while crossing the ocean a few years later. In 1869, she left Germany and came to Dubuque, Iowa where she was married to Clem Wente in 1872. They moved to Carroll County in 1876.

A second obit (in German) says, "Grandmother Wente is no more. Since the 25th of March, she has been in the darkness of the grave. Her original name as born was Balster. She married the first time, in 1857, to Joseph Froehle who lost his life as a seaman, along with a brother of the deceased. Another brother also preceded her into eternity.

The departed one left three children:  Mrs. Clem (Clement) Stallman in Carroll County, Mrs. M.H. Schafer and Clemens Wente. Also left to mourn are 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren as well as her stepson, H. Wente, to whom she was a good step-mother.

She was buried in St. Bernard's churchyard under the breast of earth. May the greetings of earth be light and may she rest in peace."

Note from barbara: Somewhere in these pages it is stated that Carl Balster was born in Germany. His parents were Clemens Frohle and Mary Lutmerding. Agnes was the daughter of Anton Balster and Catherine Meyer of Lohne, Steinfeld, Germany.

A Balster web site has been heard from. Check this out    http://www.geocities.com/marieschissel/balstertree.doc   A wonderful site! As of 2009, Geocities is no longer available
