Letter from Johnna to Celesta
Hoffman (Emma's daughter). Thanks for sharing Celesta!

Dear Celesta,
Thank you for
your warmth and love in writing of Norbert. I knew Larry and Louise and wrote to
some of Larry's sisters years ago (in Nova Scotia). Jim knew a male cousin by
the name of Greene in S.F. for awhile, years ago. I haven't heard his name
mentioned in the last 40 years.
Jim and I dated 10 years and were married 39. His ALS
was very disheartening. He hated not being able to care for himself. My strokes
have left me partially blind and lame on left side hand and arm. I have
full-time care at home, some therapy and am progressing.
I am so lonely for Jim. He was a wonderful human being;
important as an award-winning cameraman at ABC (American Broadcasting Company);
important as a union officer and protector of his fellowmen and world father to
children we have hosted from many countries and to my son Kevin, whom he adopted
Did you know that Joseph Faye Greene was from the steps of
St. Patricks in NYC and the Orphan Trains and the funny thing is that my brother
met a lady from Louisiana whose mother had the same background. Her wagon train
went east instead of north. I would like to read more on the those trains and
the sad refugees who gave their babies up because of famine.
Louise told me about how cold it could be in the winter
when she and her sisters would get to milk. My mom could shoot milk in the cat's
mouths and my brother's mouth and milk my nanny goat for my needs. They had a
lot of cows where she grew up in Texas on a cotton plantation. I'm hopeless. The
only American Indian (part Cherokee and part Creek) who can't ride a horse.
Horses toss me off or drag me. You milk a cow?
We have a large yard but I can't grow things and have
terrible allergies to flowers and chemicals and perfumes, but I'm a happy
person, though I do have to try harder now that Jim isn't with me.
I hope to meet you some day.
Love, Johnna Greene
