Joseph was born to Clemens and Bernadina Stallman Sept. 8, 1883, at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa and died Dec, 19, 1944, at Iona, Minnesota (Slayton hospital).

 He married Josephine Wadle May 11, 1911. She was born Oct. 10, 1884, at Lacona, Iowa to Anthony and  Mary Ann Griesbaum.  She died Feb. 21, 1961, at St. James, Minn.. 

They were the parents of three children:

  • Richard  Robert, b.Aug.-12-1915, at Iona. He married Susan Speer of Malvern, AR. Children: Marc Speer, JoDona Stallman Redden, Charles Stallman, Regina Stallman Harris, Anthony Robert Stallman "Tony" - d. 3-9-1982 at Veteran's Hospital in Fayetteville, AR; bur. Veteran's Cemetery, Little Rock.

Jos. Stallman sudden victim of blood clot.
Prominent Iowa farmer is called to hospital; was to undergo operation.

The Iona community, in fact, much of Murray county, was overcome with shock and sadness Monday morning when word passed about that Joe Stallman had died suddenly at the Home Hospital where he had been taken Sunday following a heart attack While it was known that Mr. Stallman had been afflicted with heart for ten years, and that of late his condition was serious, no one was aware of the gravity of the case, and his death came as a distinct shock to his family and his countless friends.

On Sunday he suffered an attack and when his physician arrived it was discovered that a blood clot had formed in his left leg. He was rushed to the hospital here and the clot was to have been removed Monday morning. Shortly before seven that morning, a second clot had formed; this one striking a heart muscle and causing almost instant death.

The deceased leaveS to grieve, besides his grief-stricken wife, three children: two sons, both in the armed forces overseas and a daughter in a governmental position in Washington, D.C.. She is on her way home now and will attend the last sad rights which will be held Friday morning from St. Columba Church, Iona, at 9:30 a.m.

     

Funeral rites held for Jos. Stallman. 
Beloved Iona citizen is buried Friday; many are in attendance at funeral.

The earthly remains of the late Joseph E. Stallman, who died suddenly a week ago Monday (Dec. 19, 1944) from a blood clot, were laid to rest last Friday, the large Columba church in Iona being filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their last respects. Mr. Stallman, as stated in the last issue of the Herald, died suddenly as he was about to submit to an operation for the removal of a blood clot. He had suffered several years with a heart ailment. Realizing the seriousness of his condition, he received extreme unction before coming to the hospital.

The deceased was born at Breda, Iowa, Sept. 8, 1883. He spent his youth there and as a young man, came to Iona with his parents and lived with them on their farm northwest of Iona.

On May 17, 1910, he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Wadle, the ceremony taking place at Rosemount, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Col. Richard Stallman in the U.S. Medical Corps, stationed in England,  S 2-c Donald H. Stallman on board ship in the Pacific Theater and Miss Emerita Stallman who is with the War Department in Washington, D.C. and was able to come home for the last rites. Two brothers: Clem of Reliance, SD and Frank of Galvin, Wash.; five sisters: Mrs. Emma Hoffman of Grantsburg, Wisc., Mrs. Anna Rolfes of Iona, Mrs. Louise Lavangie, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Clementine Schulte, Emery, SD and Mrs. Frances Jump of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also survive.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stallman lived on their farm east of Iona, later moving into Iona where they lived until 1931. In that year, he returned to farming on the old home farm northwest of Iona.

Rev. Fr. Majerus sang requiem high Mass and officiated at the grave at St. Columba Cemetery. Pallbearers were old friends and neighbors: John Stoderl,  J.K. Shoo, Fred Platt, Hubert Herrig, Peter Schroeder and Frank Ebbers.

Relatives from a distance who were present for the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Schulte, Emery, SD,  Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hoffman of Grantsburg,  Clem Stallman, Reliance. SD, Mrs. Frank Hoffman, Bridgewater, SD,  Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Stallman, Mankato, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Voss, Mrs. Herman Hatting, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Stallman, all of Ashton, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stallman, Adrian.

Last rites held at Iona for Mrs. J. E. Stallman

The Rev. Harold Gavin sang the requiem high mass at St. Columba Catholic Church, Iona Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. and officiated at the burial in St.Columba Cemetery for Mrs. Joseph E. Stallman who died at the St. James Nursing Home on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1961, the victim of pneumonia.

Pallbearers were Iona friends and neighbors: Joseph Ehleringe, Alfred Herrig, Hubert Herrig, Mark Platt, Paul Platt and Jack Shoo.

Josephine Wadle was born Oct. 10, 1884, at Lacona, Iowa where she spent her girlhood. As a young woman she worked in Galesburg, Ill. and Albuquerque, NM before coming to Minnesota to keep house for her brother Frank on a farm northwest of Iona.

On May 17, 1910 she married Joseph E. Stallman in her home parish, St. Mary's at Rosemount, in Warren county, Iowa. Three children were born to this marriage: Richard of Eureka Springs, Ark., Emerita, Minneapolis, and Donald of Lake Lillian, Minn.

Mrs. Stallman was preceded in death by her husband who died in the Slayton Hospital Dec.  19, 1944, from a blood clot from complications of  a heart condition.

Mr. and Mrs. Stallman were residents of the Iona community all their married life with the exception of a year spent in Des Moines, Iowa. Mrs. Stallman was a charter member of the Little Flower Court No. 854 of the Catholic Daughters of America and also of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Iona Galles-Peipgras VFW Post 9680.
