Herman Hatting children: Alice, Ambrose Erwin, Elmer, JoAnn Marie's obituaries Marie Catherine was born Mar. 24, 1915 at White Lake, Aurora County, SD to Clem and Anna Schelle Stallman. She moved to the family farm southeast of Reliance and lived there until womanhood. She attended North Cooper School south of the farm through the eighth grade, quitting as most young people did in those days to help on the farm. As soon as she was old enough she left the farm as did her brothers and sisters before her. She worked in Iowa and Minnesota as housekeeper and babysitter until her marriage. Feb. 2, 1936, Marie married Herman George Hatting at Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa. Herman was born Feb. 14, 1901, at Spelle, Germany to Bernard and Anna (b.Aug. 3, 1865 at Halverde, Germany) AHUS Hatting. He migrated to the United States in 1923, settling at the home of his uncle, Henry Hatting Sr., at Ashton, Iowa. He became an American citizen in 19 and began farming his own land in 1935. He and Marie farmed south of Ashton 39 years during which time they suffered a considerable loss to fire, but rebuilt soon after. Herman was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus and Marie is a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and Council of Catholic Women. They sold their farm in 1979 and bought a new home in Ashton. Their winters were spent at San Juan, Texas and the warm months were spent back home. Herman passed away in 19 and Marie continues to fly south every winter as long as her health allows. 2 Marie C. Hatting was born on March 24, 1915, in White Lake, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Clement and Anne (Schelle) Stallman. She lived her youth in Reliance, South Dakota, where she attended Cooper Country School. She was united in marriage to Herman G. Hatting of Allendorf, Iowa, on February 6, 1936, in Sibley,Iowa. They farmed in Allendorf, Iowa, for five years and then moved east of Ashton, Iowa, where they lived and farmed until 1979, when they retired and moved to the house in Ashton, where Marie continued to live. Herman passed away on January 24,1994. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ashton, the Catholic Daughters of America and 100 Club. Marie loved to quilt, play bingo, dominos and cards, sell ink pens and advertising, and watch birds. Herman and Marie enjoyed fishing together. She really enjoyed the 34 years she wintered in Texas. She passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2008, at her home in Ashton, surrounded by her family. Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Alice and Dale Hassebroek of Spirit Lake, lA, Erwin and Lori Hatting of Ashton, lA, Elmer and Nelva Hatting of Ocheyedan, lA, JoAnn and Gary Groth of Sioux Falls, SD; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and sister: Francis Nanneman of Marceline, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman , son Ambrose, her parents and nine brothers and sisters.
