Joseph Francis Schelle was born Mar. 9, 1818 at Hoxter, Paderborn, Germany.  Joseph, a shoemaker,  married Franceska HENKENNIUS in 1844 and they had a son, Frank Joseph. Joseph passed away in 1852 of cholera. Franceska  was born Mar. 19, 1818, at Schmaekler Munster, Westphalia (or Schoenecten, Germany) to Anton and Theresa Henkennius and died Mar. 18, 1898 at Dyersville, Iowa.

After Joseph passed away, Franceska married Henry JANSE in 1854 at Brakel, Prussia, Germany. A daughter was born to them in July of 1855. They, along with Franceska's parents, Anton and Theresa Henkennius, left Bremer, Germany for America aboard the USS Jubilium. There were 151 passengers on that ship,  two months to 58 years of age; seven were under the age of one year. During the voyage, one person died and two children were born. The ship arrived at the Port of New Orleans Nov. 25, 1856. The family traveled up to New Vienna, Iowa and by the spring of 1857, they had settled on the Andrew Krapfl farm. In 1863, they moved onto their farm in Bremmen Township, Delaware County, Iowa.

Frank Joseph (F.J.) Schelle (Anna Mary Schelle's father and  my great-grandfather, ) was born Feb. 23, 1850, at  Hoxter, Paderborn, Germany to Joseph Francis and Franceska Henkennius and died Sept. 29, 1941, in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.  My great-grandmother, Maria Anna BERNING (pronounced Bare ning,) was born Aug. 1, 1863, also in Paderborn, Germany to Gerhard Berning and Maria Anna HARTING?  F. J. and Maria Anna were married Mar. 1, 1873,  at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.  That summer they moved to a farm they had purchased west of Breda (the home of Gregory Schelle in 1984.)  Their first winter was spent in a  temporary house until they built their home in 1874. I believe the house remains (2000). They were of the Catholic faith.

Four children were born to F.J. and Marie Anne:  (1. Joseph Francis, died at 10;  (2. Marie Anne, died at age 13;  (3. Francisca, died at age two,  and (4. Anna Mary .  Marie's health began to fail in 1881; the farm was rented out and the family moved into a house in Breda owned by Willard Stark (1984.) That fall, Frank established a furniture business and subsequently took an agency for Iowa Marble Works and sold sewing machines. Maria died June 7, 1884.

by Henry Schelle

Henry Janse was born April 5, 1828, at Brokel Kreis Hoxlier Wesphalia, Germany, and came to America in 1856 with his wife and two children. His wife, the former Francis (Franceska)  Henkenious Schelle, was the widow of Joseph Schelle, a shoemaker. They had one son, Franz Joseph Schelle. Joe Schelle died from the cholera that was raging through Germany during the 1850s.

Francis Henkenious Schelle Janse was born in the Kreis Hosters Mar. 19, 1818. On Feb. 26, 1854,  Francis Henkenious Schelle married Henry Janse. A daughter, Thresa Janse, was born Jan. 3, 1855.

In 1856, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Janse, Thresa Janse and Franz Joseph Schelle came to America arriving at St. Louis, Mo. Here, Mr. Janse had to seek employment to make enough money to to continue their trip to Iowa. They arrived at East Dubuque in the early spring of 1857. Mr. Lucek of New Vienna met them with a team and wagon at Dubuque. The thin ice on the Mississippi was no longer safe for heavy loads so Mr. Janse made several trips across the thin ice with their belongings on a sled. Coming to New Vienna, Mr. Schelle remembered that he sat under a big chair Mr. Lueck had bought at Dubuque as it snowed heavily during the trip.

The Janse family lived for several months with the George Krapfl family then moved to the Andrew Krapfl farm. Here, another daughter, Josephine, was born in 1858, then their son, Matt, was born. These children were named after their good neighbors, Matt and Josephine Shorn, who lived on Bear Creek. Matt Janse married Regina Smith and they had a son who became a priest, the Rev. H.A. Janse, pastor at Larchwood, Iowa. A few years later Herman was born. He was their last child.

Henry Janse, a shoemaker by trade in Germany, became a very successful farmer in Iowa. During his residence in Bremer County he was elected constable, then justice of the peace. He was a township clerk for many years. During bad weather he would ride to church on horseback, never failing to be there.

Mr. and Mrs. Janse attended church at New Vienna until the new St. Francis parish was established in 1862. They became members of St. Francis.

In 1876, Mr. Janse sold his farm to Anton Dingbaum and retired to a home south of the St. Francis church. Here, Mrs. Janse died Mar. 18, 1898. She was 79 years old. Mr. Janse then made his home with his daughter, Mrs. George Krapfl. He died a year later on April 5, 1899, at the age of 71.  Note from barbara ... I have his death listed as Oct. 4, 1880. I don't know where I got that date, but wanted to share the information.

Note from Barbara ... in June, 2010 we  had our centennial Stallman reunion at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Reliance. A silent auction was held at this time and several items from our ancestors were auctioned off. One item was a necklace with little square beads (like hospitals used to put on babies'  wrists. The beads spelled FRANCESKA. Could they have belonged to this Franceska or to the daughter of F.J. Schelle and Anna Mary Berning, also named Franceska? I would tend to believe it was the latter, but we will never know. This necklace was purchased by Frances Stallman-King, daughter of Albert and Anna Black-Stallman.
