He was a Revolutionary War soldier according to information in "Record
of Service of CT Men in the War of Revolution". Newell, Riverius from
Wetherfield, CT served Feb 1778 to Mar 6, 1779. In the "History of
Cornwall, VT" by Rev. Lyman Matthews, pub 1862, Riverius is mentioned
as a settler of Cornwall. "John Ballard was an early settler on a
small lot north of town. He kept a store and in connection, as was
common in those days, manufactured potash. In 1790 he sold to Riverius
Newell, who had previously bought a lot of Israel C. Jones on the east
side of the north and south road, and another lot of 50 acres of Jacob
Peck. Newell was a blacksmith, and lived where Capt. Alanson Peck now
lives."

Co., OH); (2) 2 Jan 1827 Knox Co., OH to Abigail Teagarden (d. 10 Apr 1878)

Service in the Revolution: Riverius enlisted in New Hartford, Litchfield
Co., CT for three years on 7 Feb 1778 in Capt. John Whitingfs Co.
attached to the Third CT regiment commanded by Col. Samuel B. Webb. He
served in this company and regiment as a private. In the summer of 1778
at the time of the invasion of Newport, his regiment was attached to
Gen. James M. Varnumfs Brigade and marched to Rhode Island, engaging in
battle 29 Aug 1778 and commended for its conduct. They wintered in RI
and he was honorably discharged in Warren, RI on 6 Mar 1779.
Pension: Riverius applied 5 Feb 1820, age 64 and a resident of Mount
Vernon, Knox Co., OH. His pension was approved and he received a monthly
allowance of $8 commencing 5 Feb 1826. On 29 Aug 1820 he filed a
declaration of service and a schedule of his estate with the Knox Co.
court which valued his property at not to exceed $37.75 and $4 for
property at hand.
Widowf Pension: Abigail applied 20 Apr 1853, age 62 and a resident of
Licking Co., OH. She was placed on the pension roll 12 Sep 1853 with an
annual allowance of $96.
More of His Story: In 1790 Riverius bought land in Cornwall, Addison
Co., VT. In 1811 he moved with most of his family to Knox Co., OH. He
was a blacksmith in Mount Vernon in 1812. During the War of 1812
Riverius was the enrolling officer for the militia in Richland Co.,
although he lived in Knox Co. It was probably his son Riverius who
served as a private in Capt. Joseph Walkerfs Co. from Knox Co. during
the War of 1812. Riverius was one of the first settlers of Miller Twp.
In Oct 1813 he was one of the 17 voters from that township in the state
election. Twice after moving to Ohio, he moved back to Pittsford,
Rutland Co., VT to live with his son Gordon, but returned to Mount
Vernon both times. He married Abigail when he was 71 years old. He was a
Past Master of the Masons Mount Zion Lodge No. 9 present in Mount Vernon
in 1817 and was buried by the Masons on 30 Mar 1835. One of his
grandsons was Knox County historian N.N. Hill.
