Notes
Buried in Grave C624, Sutton Rd Cemetery, as William Charles Wilkinson Read
The Reads are said to have been Plymouth Brethren.
William became a member of the Open Brethren, whilst Fanny Newbegin (and perhaps others?) became Exclusive Brethren.
According to family tradition, he bought out his boss on his marriage in 1884, and established a reputation making handmade saddles, riding boots, etc. About 1890 he started to go blind (possibly due to drink), and was completely blind within a few years. About this time, his two eldest sons (William and Edward) embezzled funds from the family firm, and William fled to America, failed to make a success there, and committed suicide. Meanwhile, the impoverished family moved first to Forest Gate,
thence to Southend. Here Sarah set up a successful dress-making business, until she herself went blind.
I suspect this to be a colourful misreading of a family breakup, perhaps triggered by William's remarriage in 1884.
A William Charles Read, believed by other researchers to be Mabel's step-brother, is shown in US Census records to have
emigrated in 1886. Mabel's step-brother is known to have been in England 5 April 1891, as he is listed in the census at
26 Homer Street. However, a tradition in the American Read family has it that the William in America emigrated at least twice, returning to England between the two. William died of bronchitis at Little Falls in May 1939, not suicide. His brother Edward also emigrated, although not necessarily at the same time, and the two
brothers were living in the same household in the 1910 census of Little Falls
