William Stanier [1847 - 1905]

[1847 - 1905] FFFFF

Born: 1847 Birmingham
There appears to be no Birth Certificate for William Stanier, nor any baptism. His parentage, date and place of birth are derived from, for example, the 1851 census.

Father: John Stanier

Mother: Mary Heaven

5-generation pedigree

Siblings: (For dates, etc, see the extended family)

  1. John Stanier

  3. James Stanier
James was baptised at All Saints, the baptism entry has the letter P in the margin, which I take to mean pauper, although it has been suggested this denoted the private baptism of a child not expect to survive.

Note the difference in address on the Death Certificate and the Probate records. I suspect the address in the Probate records to be in error: 1906 Kellys lists an Harry Thomas Watton living at 479 Park Rd.

Directories:

1892-4: Kellys Birmingham William Stanier, beer retailer, 22 Norton St Hockley
1895: Kellys Birmingham William Stanier, grocer and beer retailer, 121 Lodge Rd Hockley
1897-1903: Kellys Birmingham William Stanier, beer retailer, 22 Norton St Hockley
1904-6: Kellys Birmingham William Stanier, beer retailer, 459 Park Rd Hockley

Rate Book:

23 Norton Street, All Saints, 1901
Shown as renting the Bird in Hand Licensed Beerhouse from the Holt Brewery Company.
The property had an estimated rental of £45, and a rateable value of £38. The rate for 1901 was 2s 4d in the pound, thus the rate due was £4 8s 8d.

190122½ Norton Street, All Saints
190322 Norton Street, All Saints
1904-6459 Park Rd, Hockley

Not the William Stanier born 12 May 1847, registered June 1847, or 12 June 1844, registered June 1844.

He is not recorded in Kelly's for 1896 at either the Norton Street or Lodge Road addresses: While Kelly's is often in error, the establishments have other proprietors, which suggests he actually was elsewhere. Where was he?

Said to have kept the Old Engine Public House in Park Road, which may possibly have been number 459 - an (undated) Street Directory shows the inhabitant of 459 Park Road to be a beer retailer, Joshua Bamber. Perhaps this is where William was in 1896.
