Evidence that James and Elizabeth are the parents of Mary comes from the 1861 census, which lists Hephzibah Whitmee and George Pettit Whitmee, two of Mary's children, as grandchildren of James and Elizabeth Petit.

In the 1871 census of Perry, she is recorded as "wife on a visit". It would appear that Mary had visited her daughter during her final illness, although she returned to Perry before her death.
