SUICIDE AT GAMLINGAY A sad case of suicide occurred at Gamlingay Sinks on Wednesday evening. Mr. Henry Meeks had lately left Gamlingay Sinks to go to live at Manor Farm, Gamlingay, which he had taken in succession to Mr. John Gray. The change from a smaller holding to a large one with its increased responsibility seemed to have unhinged his mind. For some time past he has been very strange in his ways and has been watched and carefully looked over. A few days ago he went back to his old house at the Sinks, where his eldest son, George, had lately married and settled, and stated he was going to stay there and would not go back to Manor Farm again. On Wednesday evening his son had considerable trouble with him and had a man or two to watch him. They got him into the house but he stated directly afterwards that he wished to go to an out-building. He had not been there many minutes, when hearing a noise his son burst the door open and found that his father had cut his throat. Dr. Hunter was sent for but could do no good and he soon died from his self-inflicted wounds. How he became possessed of the knife is not known. The doctor thought he had poisoned himself as well. Great sympathy is felt generally for the family and relations. Deceased was an old resident in the parish, honest and straightforward in his dealings and respected by all. | ![]() |
