Poll Books

Poll Books

Until the passing of An Act to amend the Law relating to Procedure at Parliamentary and Municipal Elections [18 July 1872], which sought to ensure the secrecy of the ballot, a record of the poll was made available to anyone wishing to have access to it, and many were published. These publications were not official records, being in general published by entrepreneurs in search of profit, and the information printed varies.
